From the President’s Desk

Andrew WestmorelandSamford University is an extraordinary community of learning and faith that promotes personal and professional success. We hope your every experience here inspires your growth in every arena of endeavor and you will form relationships that will endure for a lifetime.

Fall 2009 is only a few short weeks away when we open the 169th anniversary session of Samford University. We are expecting a robust class of some 750 freshmen. I know you will join me in welcoming the class of 2013 to our community.

To enhance service to the university community we have opened the HUB, our 24/7 service center. Located in the west lobby of University Center, the HUB serves as a nerve-center of information and assistance. The office is staffed around the clock and the campus phone number is 726-2407.  If you have a problem or a suggestion, or simply need a tip for an inexpensive off campus weekend meal, the staff at the HUB is prepared to help. We are committed to continually improving Samford for your benefit. I will continue to rely on your voices to let me know how we are doing.

Best wishes for a wonderful semester,
Andy Westmoreland

Operations and Planning

Public Safety & Emergency Management

Mike Coppage has been hired as the new Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management. Coppage joins the department after a major restructure of the unit during the last academic year.”  He has a long career of service to our community and state.  He worked for the Birmingham Police Department for 24 years, progressing through the ranks and serving as Chief of Police from 1998 to 2003.  He left that role when he was appointed by Governor Riley to become the Director of the Alabama Department of Public Safety. He served the state in that role until his retirement in 2006. During his time as Chief of Police for Birmingham, the Birmingham News named him one of the top 10 influential leaders in government.

In addition to his credentials in law enforcement and emergency management, he is an outstanding citizen and a wonderful leader. He brings a leadership style focused on communication and empowerment.  He understands the mission of Samford and the wonderful community of people that support our operations. Mike will be a outstanding new team leader in the Division of Operations and Planning (OPS).

The restructured Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management will hold several safety education programs in the fall. To find out topics and session dates, check out the Public Safety website at http://www3.samford.edu/ops/publicsafety/.

Make sure you sign up for the Rave alert system at http://ops.samford.edu/. This system is activated in the event of a campus emergency and is a critical communication tool in the university's emergency management plan.

Transportation Services

In spring 2009, the Department of Transportation Services was formed to handle all parking and ticketing. This function was removed from the Department of Public Safety, so that officers can focus on crime prevention and safety education.

The Ticket Appeal Form can now be found at http://ops.samford.edu/event/transportservices.aspx. Note that tickets can only be appealed within 10 calendar days of the date of the citation. Reference the Student Rights and Responsibilities section of the Web-based Student Handbook.

While the Department of Public Safety no longer oversees the ticketing functions on campus, they still enforce parking designated for drivers with disabilities and fire lanes. Officers can also ticket and remove vehicles blocking areas or creating hazardous driving conditions. These areas are enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
