Senate
What is Senate?
As one of the branches of the Student Government Association, Senate is a governing body of elected students that act as the voice of the undergraduates. Students’ ideas and opinions are the driving force for resolutions passed by the Senate for the student body. In recent years, resolutions have been passed concerning visitation, library hours, and the installation of O’Henry’s coffee shop. Also, Senate will appropriate money to different organizations each year. This promotes the respective organizations on campus while allowing them to do things beneficial for their organization and the entire campus.
Who is on Senate
The presidents of each class and elected Senators make up the Senate. The officers and senators will then be divided into committees to represent the different areas of focus.
How do I get elected?
At the beginning of each year are the Fall SGA elections. These elections are for class officers (President, Vice-President, and Secretary) and senators. Only the presidents of each respective class have a seat on Senate. The senators can run for a seat on Senate by representing their location on the campus (central, west, Beeson, and commuter) or by representing their individual college. There are usually around 35 seats on Senate each year.
*Elections will be held the third week of school. Look for more information during the first week.
