Julie Hedgepeth Williams

Portrait of Julie Williams Ph.D.

Banquet Speaker

Julie Hedgepeth Williams grew up hearing about the Titanic firsthand from her great-uncle, Albert Caldwell, who survived the disaster at age 26, along with his wife, Sylvia, and baby son, Alden.  Julie was so inspired by Albert's story that she majored in history (and English) at Principia College.  After college, she was a newspaper reporter in Clinton, NC, for most of the 1980s, recording, as they say, the "first draft of history."  She eventually found her way to the University of Alabama to get a master's and then a PhD, both focusing on media history.

She is the past president of the American Journalism Historians Association, and she teaches Journalism & Mass Communication as well as Communication Arts courses part-time at Samford University.
