Marian L. Smith was the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) Historian from 1988 to 2003
and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Historian since 2003. She serves as Chief of the
USCIS Historical Research Branch and directs the agency's History Office, Historical Reference Library,
and fee-based Genealogy Program. She is an authority on 19th and early 20th century U.S. immigration and
naturalization records in the custody of both the National Archives and her agency and is a familiar speaker
at national genealogical conferences.
