Samford in Bamberg

The German experience begins with a ramble through storied landscapes
of picturesque villages, walled towns, and castles as we make
our way from the busy financial center of Frankfurt to Bamberg
in Franconia. The Sprachinstitut Treffpunkt is situated in the
ancient church and university town of Bamberg and boasts a working
relationship with Bamberg University´s notable institute
devoted to the pedagogy of teaching German as a second language.
LOCATION
Bamberg is a historic center of Christian life, and the most significant
of its churches is the 12th century cathedral which contains one
of the finest works of the High Medieval art, the Bamberger Reiter.
The surrounding country is dense with historical sites, castles,
and exciting outdoor opportunities for excursions, hiking, and rafting.
THE STUDY CENTER
Samford in Germany operates in cooperation with the Sprachinstitut-Treffpunkt,
a privately owned language institute that offers elementary, intermediate,
and advanced language classes. Students with NO EXPERIENCE in German
can expect to gain basic proficiency. Students with experience in
German will be placed appropriately depending upon their oral and
written expertise. Instruction is characterized by small classes,
individual attention, and weekly evaluations.
LODGING WITH FAMILIES IN BAMBERG
Students are assigned to families which have undergone a careful
evaluation process. These families have been carefully selected
based on a number of criteria to assure that the family stay will
maximize Samford students´opportunity for rapid proficiency
growth in spoken German.
PROFICIENCY TESTING
Each student will be tested for proficiency by Sprachinstitut
Treffpunkt at the beginning of the four week period, assigning
students according to their proficiency level to various levels.
Midway through the program and at the end students will be further
tested by Samford faculty for oral and written proficiency.
SAMFORD PROFESSOR- IN-RESIDENCE
