Critical Languages
Course Offerings
The Critical Languages Program (CLP) in
the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Samford University
presents a unique opportunity for students interested in pursuing
language study in Arabic, Chinese, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese,
Portuguese, Russian, or Swahili. The courses are offered concurrently
with Samford's regular fall and spring semester schedules. The
classes meet from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
We offer 4 courses for 4 credits each over a two year time span.
Thus, in the fall semester we offer the first and third semester
courses, that is, 101 and 201, and in the spring semester we
offer the
second and fourth semester courses, i.e. 102 and 202. All courses take
place in either Chapman or Burns Hall.
Below is a chart of our tutors and the respective
language that they teach.

Our CLP program is affiliated with the national
organization known as NASILP(National Asociation of Self-Instructional
Language Program). Samford's program is unique in that: 1) it
provides an avenue for students to pursue minors in languages
that otherwise would be impossible; and 2) it is available to
individuals in the community, to high school students wishing
to fulfill a high school language requirement, and also to university
students at any of the participating institutions affiliated
with BACHE (the Birmingham Area Consortium for Higher Education)
which includes not only Samford, but also Birmingham-Southern
College,
Miles, Montevallo and UAB.
