Marigene
Chamberlain earned the BA in Spanish from Samford University
(1980) and the MA in Spanish from Vanderbilt University (1982).
She joined the Samford faculty in 2005 as the International
Studies Director and Instructor of Spanish. In 2008 she moved
to the World Languages and Cultures Department to serve full
time as Instructor of Spanish and Coordinator for Language
Study Abroad. She teaches lower and upper division courses
including Spanish for Missions; she also coordinates the Language
Mission Internships. She is a Qualified Administrator of the
Intercultural Development Inventory and Intercultural Development
Guided Process. She serves as summer faculty at Garrett-Evangelical
Theological Seminary’s Escuela Curso de Estudios (Spanish-language
Course of Study for local pastors) where she teaches an introductory
theology course. Prior to coming to Samford, she served for
twenty years with the General Board of Discipleship, The United
Methodist Church, in the area of leadership development for
Hispanic/Latino ministries; she continues to do volunteer
and consulting work with the National Plan for Hispanic/Latino
Ministries, The United Methodist Church and with various agencies
of The United Methodist Church in the area of Hispanic/Latino
ministry development. She has extensive experience in living,
working, and traveling abroad, including in Chile, Peru, Mexico,
Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela, Brazil, Paraguay, Spain, China
and the United Kingdom. She is a member of NAFSA: The Association
of International Educators, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Delta Pi,
and the Alabama Association of Foreign Language Teachers.
Her professional interests include Latin American and US Latin
American literature and cultures, teaching and mentoring persons
in the development of intercultural competency skills, theology,
diversity and race relations in the US, and creative writing.
Her recreational interests include crossword and Sudoku puzzles,
mystery novels, and gardening. She is currently a Doctor of
Education student with the Graduate Theological Foundation,
doing research in the area of theology and intercultural competency. |
