Fren 101-102 ELEMENTARY FRENCH I & II

An introduction to French culture and to developing basic proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing French. Three class hours and two laboratory sessions (audio-visual/ computer) per week provide students with novice level proficiency in preparation for the intermediate level sequence. Credits: 4 each course

Fren 110 ELEMENTARY PROFICIENCY ENHANCEMENT

A mentored review and reinforcement of listening, speaking, reading, and/or writing skills, grammar structures, or career-oriented language context, as determined by individual student needs. Prerequisite: Successful completion of French 102 or equivalent prior experience; permission of the department. Credits: 1

Fren 201-202 INTERMEDIATE FRENCH I & II

A systematic review with continued emphasis on enhancing proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural understanding. The sequence includes three class hours and two audio-visual and computer laboratory sessions weekly to provide a setting for intermediate-level mastery. Prerequisite: completion of course 102 or satisfactory score on placement exam. Successful completion of this sequence fulfills the General Education language requirement. A certificate of proficiency achievement will be awarded at the conclusion of the sequence. Credits: 4 each course.

Fren 203 ACCELERATED INTERMEDIATE FRENCH

An accelerated intermediate course that compresses essential elements of 201-202 into one semester. Designed to develop cross-cultural understanding and proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding, it includes three class hours & two laboratory sessions each week. Prerequisite: grade of A in Fren 102, or 3 or more years of high school French, or the required score on the placement exam. Successful completion of this sequence fulfills the General Education language requirement. A certificate of proficiency achievement will be awarded at the conclusion of the sequence Credits: 4.

A study of intercultural communication and advanced French language proficiency as needed for business contexts. The course stresses commercial vocabulary, correspondence, and documentation appropriate to a variety of professional settings. This very practical course is open to any student with advanced proficiency as an upper level elective. Required for Language and World Trade concentration. Credits: 4

Stresses reading of primary works, critical analysis, library research, multiple-draft composition, and continued development of advanced oral and written language proficiency within a literary context. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Fren 202, 203, or equivalent, concurrent enrollment in an approved 3 hour host class in another discipline, and permission of the department. Fren 424 SENIOR CAPSTONE:SECOND LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODOLOGY

A study of the fundamental strategies that form the infrastructure of the teaching process for certification at all levels of second-language acquisition methodology, N-12 or 7-12. The course emphasizes the materials and methods appropriate to the designated levels of learning while promoting an awareness of the multiple facets of language learning. This capstone course for seniors seeking teacher certification also includes preparation for exit Oral and Writing Proficiency and Content exams. Taught as a 4-credit course by WLAC faculty or as a one-credit addendum to EDUC 424. Credits: 1 or 4

Fren 442W SENIOR CAPSTONE: RESEARCH AND WRITING

A research and writing project designed to synthesize skills acquired and knowledge gained in previous course work. Students, with guidance from a mentor, will develop a thesis, propose a solution to a problem, or produce and perform a creative work. This capstone course for Language and Literature majors also includes preparation for exit Oral and Writing Proficiency and Content exams. Prerequisite: Senior status, successful completion of at least one 400-level literature course. Credits: 4

Fren 470 SENIOR CAPSTONE: INTERNATIONAL TRADE INTERNSHIP

A directed student internship in an international business setting in the U.S. or abroad, mentored by Samford faculty and supervised by on-site agency personnel. In addition to 150 contact hours of on-site work and journals kept in the target language, Language and World Trade seniors will prepare for exit Oral/Writing Proficiency and Content exams. Prerequisite: Senior status, successful completion of course 370, permission of/placement by the department. Credits: 4
