WELCOME
to Geography at Samford University

The Department
of Geography is located on the 2nd floor of the Ralph W. Beeson University
Center Annex, on the western end of Samford University's central
quad (see
maps to Samford Geography).
The department enjoys some of the best equipped geography facilities
in Alabama. Students have access to state-of-the-art computer labs for
Cartography, Geographic Information Science (GIS), and Remote Sensing.
Our laboratories include the ESRI Southeastern Regional Training
Facility (computer laboratory for undergraduate GIS instruction
and ESRI
software training), the GIS Lounge (computer laboratory for
GIS project development), and the Rust International Laboratory
(for physical geography instruction).
Geography is a broad discipline
that integrates many interests and possibilities for study. Geography
is about understanding location, recognizing the relationships among
places, and interpreting the complexities associated with human/environment
interactions. Geographic knowledge can help you better understand historical
developments and their influence over contemporary landscapes. Globablization
has enhanced the importance of geographical analyses involving (a) linkages
between global processes and local outcomes; and (b) the rapidly expanding
interconnectivity of places around the world. Important technological
advances in the mapping sciences are enabling computer-based solutions
to problems involving the collection, synthesis, analysis, and communication
of spatially referenced information.
The SU Department
of Geography offers a Bachelor of Science degree with a major
in Geography and are joint sponsors (with the Department of Biology)
of an Environmental
Science and Geographic Information Systems major. A traditional
minor in Geography is also offered,
as well as a Certificate in Geographic
Information Science. We offer a wide range of thematic, regional
and applied geography courses and maintain an aggressive GIS internship
program. Graduates experience a very high rate of successful placement,
particularly within the GIS industry.
