Inspiration and Insight: Book Synopses

Great Emergence 1. The Great Emergence Recent guest speaker at the RCPE's Day Apart for Women pastors, Phyllis Tickle presents a compelling and thoughtful examination of social and cultural changes and how they contribute to the 'emerging' shape of Christianity.  Tickle's reflections are based on decades of keen observation and study of patterns present in the history of Christian church over the centuries.  Readers will find in this volume considerable help understanding how Christianity is changing and why.
Keeping Sabbath Wholly 2. Keeping the Sabbath Wholly Perhaps known best for "A Royal Waste of Time", her thought-provoking analysis of congregational worship, Dawn's book on the meaning of Sabbath addresses a much discussed but seldom implemented practice.  The book presents helpful theological reflections on the subject as well as practical resources for the practice of a holistic approach to Sabbath observance.
The Congregation Driven Ministry resized 3. Congregation Driven Ministry African-American pastor and recent Sabbath Leave participant Dr. Larry Ellis has written a practical resource for pastors seeking to activate their membership to experience maturing faith.  Ellis' thesis centers on his thinking that maintaining balance in four key "dimensions" of life is critical to the experience of maturing faith.  The dimensions are: spiritual, physical, relational, and financial.  Members experience renewed sense of purpose and mission through proper balance of these key dimensions.  Further, congregations benefit and become more effective as members focus on maturity rather than mere unengaged attendance and involvement.
My Heart Rejoices sm 4. My Heart Rejoices Sr. Mary McGehee has lived a life of daily prayer and community as a Benedictine Sister at Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, Alabama, since 1960.  Her autobiography, written while a participant in the Center's Sabbath Leave program, reveals the not-so-simple life of a Sister.  The dailyness of the rhythm of scripture and liturgy can become burdensome to some while for others it is the fuel energizing movement toward God.  Sr. Mary's simple remembrances and reflections are offered with humility and wit and encourage the reader to be more observant of the "God-threads" in one's own ordinary life with God.
Creating a Life with God resized 5. Creating a Life with God Daniel Wolpert, author of this piece, has become a popular contemporary resource for persons seeking an introduction to ancient forms of prayer and devotion.  In this 2003 publication, Wolpert discusses the disciplines of the devotional life and includes chapters on Lectio Divina, Journaling, Contemplation in Nature, and the role of Silence and Solitude in the contemplative life of faith.  A useful feature included is a step-by-step guide for an intentional prayer retreat.
