Grants for Study Leaves

Purpose

Many churches provide their ministers a limited amount of time each year to attend denominational gatherings and continuing education events.  Because the available time is limited, busy ministers tend to choose enrichment opportunities with care.  Expectations are understandably high that attendance at such events will be worth the investment of time and expense.

The Resource Center for Pastoral Excellence (RCPE) offers a Study Leave grant designed to provide busy ministers an opportunity to have a one- to two-week study experience on the campus of Samford University.  These leaves are intended to give ministers the resources to address specific areas of interest related to pastoral ministry.  Examples of activities include focused time preparing a sermon series, pursuit of writing interests, interviews with Religion Department or Divinity School faculty to discuss topics of interest, or research related to an area of concern.   Applicants have access to extensive resources at Samford University.  In addition, RCPE staff will assist applicants to craft study leaves that take advantage of conferences and continuing education events offered in other parts of the country.

A limited number of grants up to $2000 will be awarded for Study Leaves.  Grant funds can be used for any expense related to the study leave plans and activities other than international travel.

Interested ministers should contact Michael Wilson, RCPE Program Director, at (205) 726-4064 or by email at mkwilson@samford.edu to discuss interests and possibilities.
