Dr. Paul Aucoin (Dean, Academic Services) was elected vice president for association and institutional issues, American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers at the AACRAO annual meeting. He serves on the organization’s board of directors.

Dr. Kim Benner (Pharmacy) received the Sergio Stagno Friend of the Housestaff Award at Children’s Hospital of Birmingham, her practice site, in May. Pediatric medical residents select the award recipient based on valuable support rendered during residency training.

Dr. Amanda Borden (Communication) was named the 2002 Outstanding Alumna for the University of Alabama Department of Communication Studies in April at Honors Day convocation.

Dr. Stephen Chew (Chair, Psychology) was invited to help grade Psychology Advanced Placement essays for the Education Testing Service in June. Some 200 psychology teachers graded 52,000 essays from across the nation; Chew scored 525.

Dr. Joe Dean (Dean, Pharmacy) was installed on the board of directors of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy [AACP] and as past chair of the Council of Deans at the annual AACP meeting in July. He was appointed to a two-year term as chair/ convener of the Private Colleges of Pharmacy.

Dr. Eric Fournier (Geography) will receive one of 10 Distinguished Teaching Achievement Awards presented to North American professors by the National Council for Geographic Education at its annual meeting in October.

Dr. Clara Gerhardt (Human Sciences and Design) was nominated to represent the Alabama Psychological Association on the Alabama State Board of Examiners in Psychology.

Dr. Carl Gooding (Dean, Business) has begun a three-year term on the Business Accreditation Committee of AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. He also serves on the board of governors of Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society for accredited business schools.

Reba Clark (Metro College) was named the Joe O. Lewis Metro College Faculty Scholar in May. Clark teaches, coordinates course offerings and advises students in the Counseling Foundations program offered by Metro College in the Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies.

Scottish Baptist College Principal to Head Samford Religion Department

The Reverend Dr. Kenneth B. E. Roxburgh, principal of Scottish Baptist College in Glasgow, Scotland, has been named chair of the Samford Department of Religion. Roxburgh will join Samford this fall after eight years at the Scottish institution. He succeeds Dr. Sigurd Bryan, who retired in May. The new religion chair is a teacher, writer and former pastor. He taught widely in the areas of church history and historical theology, and has written numerous journal articles and essays on those subjects. “Dr. Roxburgh comes to us as a recognized scholar, an experienced pastor and preacher, an effective classroom teacher, a dedicated educator of ministerial students, and an international leader among Baptists and other Christians,” said Samford Provost Brad Creed. “He will make a significant contribution of service to our students, faculty and constituents.” Roxburgh is author of the book Thomas Gillespie and the Origins of the Relief Church in 18th Century Scotland, published by Peter Lang in 1999. Gillespie was a leading evangelical who founded a new denomination, the Relief Church, after leaving the Church of Scotland. He disagreed with the church policy of imposing a minister on a congregation against its will. “The book is thoroughly researched, admirably organized and readily comprehensible—an important recent contribution to Scottish church history,” wrote historian D. W. Bebbington of the University of Stirling. Roxburgh also serves as editor of the Scottish Bulletin of Evangelical History. Prior to joining Scottish Baptist College, Roxburgh served as pastor of three Scottish Baptist churches during 1978–94. He has been a member of the Baptist World Alliance Commissions on Doctrine and Theological Education since 2000. He serves on the Baptist Union of Scotland Council and Executive Committee. Roxburgh holds the bachelor’s degree with honors from London Bible College, the master of theology from Aberdeen University and Ph.D. from Edinburgh University.
