Edmund D. Pellegrino Medal
Honors Namesake, Secundy and Fletcher for Bioethics Contributions
Samford
University has created an award named for noted Georgetown University
bioethicist Edmund D. Pellegrino that recognizes “contributions
to health-care ethics in the selfless spirit” of the medal’s namesake.
"The John Carroll Professor of Medicine and director of the
Center for Advanced Study of Ethics at Georgetown, Pellegrino is
widely considered to be the father of the American bioethics movement.
He was one of the first three recipients of the Edmund D. Pellegrino
Medal at an April 20 conference sponsored by the Healthcare Ethics
and Law [HEaL] Institute of Samford’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy.
Also receiving Pellegrino Medals were Marian Gray Secundy, professor
of medical ethics at Howard University and founding director of
the National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at
Tuskegee University, and John C. Fletcher, Kornfield Professor of
Biomedical Ethics and director emeritus of the Center for Biomedical
Ethics at the University of Virginia.
Speaking at the conference, Pellegrino reminded attendees that whatever
role they play in promoting ethical health care, they are "involved
in the moral outcome" of treatment, and thus are "performing
an exquisitely important service for the communities in which we
live."
"HEaL Institute Director Bruce D. White-who as a physician,
pharmacist and lawyer embodies the interdisciplinary commitment
of the HEaL Institute—noted that for almost a decade, the Joint
Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has
required accredited facilities to be able to address ethical dilemmas
arising from patient care.
The HEaL Institute offers assistance in this area to hospitals from
faculty in Samford's arts and sciences, business, divinity, law,
nursing and pharmacy schools.
