Students
called, and alumni responded in record numbers to the Samford
Phonathon this year. The result: $137,457 in gifts to Samford
University.
The total oversubscribed the Phonathon goal of $125,000 for
fiscal 2000–01 and topped last year’s total of $94,000 by
more than $40,000.
Students make calls to alumni four nights a week during the
school year, soliciting support for Samford. Their mission
is twofold: to build and strengthen relationships with alumni,
and to raise money for Samford.
"The
success of this year’s effort is directly related to the enthusiasm
and dedication of the 30 student callers," said Marianne
Pohl, Phonathon administrator. "They truly believe in
what they are doing and effectively express that excitement
to our alumni."
Callers go through an extensive training program at the start
of the school year, learning about Samford’s history and how
the Phonathon effort can impact the school’s future. In addition
to seeking funds, callers express appreciation for past support,
get Seasons notes from alumni and tell them about Samford
events in their area.
This year, student callers also created a prayer ministry,
offering alumni the opportunity to share prayer requests.
