Gordon, Alabama: Pioneer Riverboat Town
by Martha Lee Dickson '59
Gordon-located on the Chattahoochee
River east of Dothan-was a well-known riverboat town of the 19th
century. Founded in 1819, it thrived as a center of commerce
and produced Houston County's first probate judge, first tax
assessor and several state senators and representatives. Today,
only a post office and a few old homes remain. Dickson's work
keeps alive the memory of one of Alabama's earliest towns (Dickson's
hometown), which was representative of so many steamboat era
river communities.
