PAUL ALEXANDER '81, age 43, of Hoover died Nov. 7, 2001. He was owner and manager of Ranch House Barbecue.
JOHN OTHA BLACK '39, age 85, of Montgomery died Nov.11, 2001. He pastored numerous churches.
BETH WEAKLEY BROWN '36, age 87, of Birmingham died Dec.12, 2001. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
DANIELL TAYLOR BURTON, Sr. '51, age 72, of Hoover died Feb. 12, 2002, in an automobile accident. He was a past president of the Greater Birmingham Association of Homebuilders and a member of the Homebuilders Hall of Fame.
CURTIS DOWLING CROFT '50, age 78, of Belmont, N.C., died Dec. 4, 2001. He owned Belmont Drug Company. He was a Purple Heart recipient during World War II and a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge.
IRMA RUSSELL CRUSE, M.A. '81 and '84, age 90, of Birmingham died Feb. 10, 2002. She was retired from BellSouth. She was editor of The Alabama Baptist Historian and active in professional and civic groups.
R. BILL CULBRETH '44, age 79, of Birmingham died Nov. 6, 2001. A pastor of churches in Kentucky, Florida, Washington, D.C., and Alabama, he taught for 20 years in the Samford Extension Division.
DOROTHY HARPER DONOVAN, M.A. '67, of Birmingham died Dec. 14, 2001. She was retired from the Jefferson County Board of Education.
JOHN VICTOR DUCK, L'54, age 75, of Fairhope died Dec. 16, 2001. He practiced law in Fairhope for 45 years and was city judge, attorney and councilman.
MARGARET McRAE EDWARDS L'79, age 70, of Birmingham died Dec. 19, 2001. She was associate vice president for endowment and planned giving at Birmingham-Southern College.
JULIE EVANS '74, age 49, of Homewood died Nov. 19, 2001.
BERNICE TAMBLYN WHITE GUY '81, age 93, of Vestavia Hills died Dec. 2, 2001. She was the author of two books, Tossed Salad and Take a Break, and was an instructor of Ikenobo floral art.
KATHERINE LENORE HARRIS '00, age 39, of Montevallo died Nov. 9, 2001.
GERALDINE SCOTT VARDAMAN HESTER '71, of Cahaba Heights died Dec. 30, 2001. She taught in Birmingham and in Pasco County, Fla.
VERTA LEE JOHNSON HICKS '67 of Birmingham died Nov. 6, 2001. She was retired from the Jefferson County Schools.
SARDIS MILLARD JOHNSON '49, age 77, of Gulf Shores died Nov. 10, 2001. He was a pharmacist and hospital administrator.
ANNETTE ARENDLE KEOWN '85, age 62, of Springville died Nov. 5, 2001.

Al Garner Left His Imprint on Samford Education School Dr. Alto L. Garner was a member of the Samford faculty for 34 years and served as the first dean of its school of education. He joined Samford in 1953 after teaching six years at Georgetown (Ky.) College. In 1964, he was named chairman of the teacher education division. Two years later, when the division was elevated to school status, Garner became dean, serving until 1980. During his tenure, the school earned accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education [NCATE] and recognition from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education [AACTE]. Garner was active in both organizations, serving at the national level. He retired from Samford in 1987. The Dothan native, who died August 13 at age 84, was remembered for the many lives he touched as an educator and dean. "Students and faculty continually expressed their appreciation to him for the positive influence he made to their lives," recalled his friend and colleague, Dr. Charlotte Freeman of the education school. Garner attended Samford and held an undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama, master's from New York University and doctorate from the University of Kentucky. An ordained minister, he also studied at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and was pastor or interim pastor of churches in Texas, Kentucky and Alabama. Garner served in the U.S. Army during World War II. As a young man, he played saxophone in a local band, and developed a lifelong love of Big Band music. He also had an affinity for poetry, philosophy, history and the Boston Red Sox, particularly their great hitter, Ted Williams.

CHARLES E. LANGSTON '39, age 87, of Tuscaloosa died Nov. 23, 2001. Pastor emeritus of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, he had served congregations in Alabama and Illinois.
WINSTON LEGGE, Sr. '34, age 88, of Talladega died Nov. 2, 2001. He was a businessman and president, chairman of the board and CEO of Talladega National Bank. He was active in civic organizations and the Motor Sports Hall of Fame. At Samford, he was a boxing champion and member of Sigma Nu fraternity.
AMELIA ROSE LEVINE '40, age 82, of Montgomery died Jan. 17, 2002. She had a long career with Regions Bank.
KENNETH BYRON LOWERY '57, age 71, of Eclectic died Dec. 1, 2001. He was retired administrator at Community Hospital, Tallassee.
JAMES W. McLANE '49, age 81, of Birmingham died Feb. 1, 2002. During his 34-year military career, he was commander, 167th Infantry-National Guard, Birmingham. He owned Dewberry Drug Company and served 19 years as secretary of the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy.
DON HAYES MILAM '49, age 82, of Ruston, La., died Oct. 21, 2001. He retired after 30 years as pharmacist at Milam's Prescription Center.
THOMAS D. MOTLEY L'84, age 51, of Dothan died Dec. 12, 2001, in an airplane crash in North Carolina. He was a partner in Motley, Motley and Yarbrough trial lawyer firm, and was a founding member of Cyber Service Technology, LLC.
JOHN EDWARD O'TOOLE '61, age 64, of Palmerdale died Jan. 1, 2002. He was the retired owner of O'Toole Engineering. He played football and ran track at Samford, and was active in the Kenny Morgan Scholarship Committee.
GAIL JOYCE PEDEN '64, age 64, of Hoover died Nov. 20, 2001. She worked in real estate after retiring from the American Red Cross and Carraway Hospital. She also owned Diagnostic, Inc.
JOSEPH NEIL POOLE III, L'76, age 51, of Pike Road died Dec. 9, 2001. He was a district judge in Butler County prior to practicing law in Montgomery.
ANNA MAE REEVES '42, age 80, of Jasper died Feb. 9, 2002. She taught at Walker High School for 40 years and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
RUTH CLARK SCHATZ '70, age 85, of Pelham died Nov. 12, 2001. She was a master flower show judge.
JACQUELINE GOGGANS McKENNA SCUCCHU '81, age 54, of Cordova died Oct. 20, 2001. She was a nurse.
SYLVIA RUTH COCHRAN SOUTHERLAND '62, age 61, of Albertville died Dec. 17, 2001. She was a teacher and an Arlington Lady at Arlington National Cemetery.
MARK J. STEVENS '97, age 28, a native of Mobile and resident of West Dundee, Ill., died Dec. 22, 2001. He was a captain in the U.S. Army, and active in triathlon competitions.
WILLIAM H. STICKLES '41, age 86, of Alexandria, Va., died Aug. 19, 2001. A career soldier who fought in World
War II, he was also facility administrative officer for Control Data corporate headquarters. He was a journalism major and edited Entre Nous.
ROLAND A. THORNBURG '49, age 78, of Jacksonville died Jan. 12, 2002. He retired from Jacksonville State University after 30 years as director of student teaching, dean of the graduate school and dean of the department of education.
McKELLER TOWNES, Jr. '50, age 74, of Morganton, Ga., died Dec. 22, 2001. He taught English at Samford, Troy State, the University of Alabama and Darton College in Albany, Ga.
ALLEN CARROLL VAUGHN '73, age 50, of Homewood died Jan. 24, 2002. He was a self-employed insurance appraiser with ACV Enterprises, Inc. He was an avid Scottish rudimental drummer who competed nationally.
KRISTIE LYNN WILLIS '96, age 29, of Birmingham died Jan. 30, 2002. She had been a reporter for The Decatur Daily, The Brewton Standard and The Alexander City Outlook. She was the fourth person in the world to receive a double lung lobe transplant. She suffered from cystic fibrosis.
RAYMOND YOST '29 of Cullman, age 94, died March 9, 2002. A businessman, he was organizer and first president of the Cullman Chamber of Commerce and a 60-year member of the Kiwanis Club with perfect attendance. He was The Cullman Times' 1999 Distinguished Citizen of the Year. A member of the Samford Alumni Council, he was Class Agent for the decade of the '20s.
CHARLES WAYNE ZUIDERHOEK '67, age 60, of Birmingham died Nov. 8, 2001. He was active in the Alabama Cerebral Palsy Association.
