'49 Alumna, Class Ring Reunited via Internet
Edith Van Keuren Hammond '49 of Clemson, S.C., has
been reunited with one of her "treasured possessions,"
thanks to the efforts of a church secretary and the Internet.
Frances DeHart, secretary at Holy Family Episcopal Church
in Chapel Hill, N.C., discovered a college class ring among
the church's lost and found articles. Engraved on the ring
were Howard College of Alabama, 1949, the initials E.B.V.K.,
and the Greek letters for Alpha Delta Pi.
Using the Internet, DeHart learned that Howard College is
now Samford University. She sent an E-mail to Samford's Department
of University Relations describing the ring with the note,
"I know someone would be surprised and pleased to be
reunited with [it]."
Through alumni records, Hammond was identified and contacted
at her residence. As it turns out, she was in Chapel Hill,
N.C., during the 2000 Christmas season visiting her daughter,
Edith Van Keuren "Sissy" Holloman. The families
attended services at Holy Family Episcopal Church, where the
daughter is a member. Hammond had the ring on a charm bracelet
with other Howard memorabilia.
"I'm very sentimental about my ring," she said.
She's looking forward to getting it back, acknowledging that,
without the Internet, it might never have happened.
