Accolades
Stephanie
Blackmon of Fairfield was named a Gates Millennium Scholar. Funded
by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the renewable scholarship
will supplement Blackmon's scholarships and existing financial aid
to full tuition.
A total of
62,000 applicants competed for the 4,000 Gates scholarship awards
nationally. A sophomore English major, Blackmon also was named one
of Alabama's Outstanding Women Student Leaders by the American Association
of University Women.
Four Samford
School of Music students were winners in recent auditions held by
the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs.
Michael Wayne
Smith of Opelika won first place in the organ division. Other winners
were violinist Layla Plunkett, Cullman, second place, string division;
Jonathan Green, Pike Road, third, piano division; and soprano Nicki
Bowen, Pine Bluff, Ark., third, women's voice.
Pharmacy student
Vinicia Lynn Thomas Cortez of Gadsden was selected by the American
Pharmaceutical Association Academy of Students of Pharmacy to receive
its national Student Leadership Award for 2001.
In her third
year at McWhorter School of Pharmacy, Cortez received a $500 scholarship
and travel expenses to the American Pharmaceutical Association national
meeting in San Francisco in March.
Thirty Samford
students took the results of months of research and preparation
to the National Conference on Undergraduate Research at the University
of Kentucky in March. The students were selected to participate
through a review process in which they competed with students nationwide
for available program slots.
Research topics
ranged from why people invest, researched by a student who is a
business major and psychology minor, to health-care needs of Mexican
migrant workers in Alabama, studied by a nursing major/Spanish minor.
