Hibbett President and CEO Newsome Named Business Alumnus of Year

Michael J. (Mickey) Newsome '62, president and chief executive officer of Hibbett Sporting Goods, Inc., has been named the Samford School of Business Alumnus of the Year.

Newsome, a Birmingham native, joined Hibbett in 1965. He became president and chief operating officer in 1981 and CEO in 1999.

Hibbett is a chain of 280 small-market sporting goods stores located in 20 states. It is headquartered in Birmingham.

"Mickey Newsome's entire career has been spent building Hibbett into a wonderful success story in sports retailing," said Samford business dean Carl Bellas. "We are pleased to be able to recognize his accomplishments."

Newsome is a board member of the National Sporting Goods Association, which he served as chairman in 1989. He is also on the board of SportsTrend magazine and is a member of the Birmingham Kiwanis Club and Birmingham Touchdown Club.

Newsome's daughters, Stacey '90 and Kelly '92, are also Samford graduates.

RICHARD C. BRACKIN and his wife, Alec, will spend two weeks next fall in the Grand Bahamas, where he will preach, teach men's Bible study and minister. Retired after 46 years in the Southern Baptist ministry, he serves interim pastorates.

TOM COX directs Tom Cox Evangelistic Association, based in Mountainburg, Ark. During 2000, he and his wife, Kay, led meetings at churches across the U.S. and conducted mission tours to India, Peru, Kenya, Latvia, Estonia, Vietnam, Mexico, Thailand and the Holy Land.

JORDAN HAIRSTON CRACRAFT of Florence retired from teaching at Bradshaw High School, Florence. She is an adjunct Spanish instructor at Northwest Shoals Community College, Shoals campus, where her classes include many students who want to better interact with the area's growing Hispanic population.

ALICE BROCK LETCHWORTH of Chesapeake, Va., retired in 2000 after teaching English for 30 years at Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth, Va.

Dr. ROBERT Z. POWELL
is director of clinical pastoral education at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. His article, "Dumbo's Feather: Supervision as Facilitation," appeared in The American Journal of Pastoral Counseling. He and his spouse, Lane HOLLAND POWELL '63, live in Lubbock, Texas.

ARTHUR E. CHRISTMAS retired in December after 29 years as pastor of North Park Baptist Church, Evansville, Ind. He and his wife, Dixie, have two grown daughters and two grandchildren.

ROBERT LARRY HASLAM of Santa Fe, N.M., retired after 27 years as executive director of Glorieta Baptist Conference Center.

Dr. LANE HOLLAND POWELL is co-author of a new textbook, Family Life Education: An Introduction, published by Mayfield Press. The first undergraduate text in the field, it combines history, theory and practice principles. She is adjunct professor of human development and family studies at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas.

JAMES GARNER of Birmingham retired in May after 36 years teaching at Gardendale High School.

WALLACE HENLEY is district director for the U.S. House of Representatives, Texas Congressional District Seven, West Harris County, Texas. His wife, Irene, is a Houston area realtor.

MARIE H. MAILE of Galesburg, Mich., retired from Pharmacia, Inc., as senior biostatistician.

JACK MARTIN of Trussville retired in June from Parker Hannifin Corp.

JOSEPH CECIL WINGARD was inducted into Montgomery's Robert E. Lee High School Class
of 1962 Hall of Fame. He teaches at Andalusia High School.

JAMES EDWARD WOODIN, Jr., works in the corporate trust area of banking, managing a territory in Orange County, Calif., for ABC Wiping Cloth Inc. He and his wife, Bonnie, live in Mission Viejo, Calif. They have two grown children.

JANICE FLEMING was recently named to the Social Security Administration's Atlanta Management Development Program. During the yearlong program, she will be involved in developmental assignments throughout the southeastern region. She is a disability specialist in the Birmingham office.

CHARLES JOHN MCCARN of Gorham's Bluff is a managing member of PinOak Advisors LLC, an investment planning firm with clients in five states.

TOM GRAYSON and JERRY REDDOCH and their wives enjoyed a summer visit at the Grayson's home in El Paso, Texas. Grayson is district manager for Walgreen's. Reddoch, who lives in Waynesboro, Miss., is pharmacy director at H. C. Watkins Hospital in Quitman, Miss. The two pharmacists met at Jones Junior College in Mississippi, where they studied pre-pharmacy before entering Samford.

MARY EPPERSON WYATT of Birmingham is principal of Creekview Elementary School in Shelby County.
