Cappella Choir Invited to Sing in Russia
The Samford
A Cappella Choir will perform in two of Russia's most prestigious
halls, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow and Capella Hall and Pavlovsk
Palace in St. Petersburg, this spring.
The Russian
Ministry of Culture invited the choir to perform in the country
during late May and early June, which will provide "extraordinary
opportunities for our students," said School of Music Dean
Milburn Price.
The A Cappella
Choir will sing a varied program of choral repertoire, including
works by historic classical composers Christopher Tye, J. S. Bach
and Johannes Brahms, 20th-century American composers Morten Lauridsen,
Edwin Fissinger, Paul Christiansen and John Ness Beck, and spirituals.
The choir also
will sing concertos by Dmitri Bortnianski, widely considered "the
Russian Mozart," Price noted. The year 2001 marks the 250th
anniversary of Bortnianski's birth.
