Manis Biography Wins Lillian
Smith Book Award
 A biography of Birmingham civil
rights leader Fred Shuttlesworth by Dr. Andrew M. Manis '70 has
been named one of three winners of the 2000 Lillian Smith Book
Awards presented by the Southern Regional Council.
The book, A Fire You Can't Put Out: The Civil Rights Life of
Birmingham's Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, was published this
year by the University of Alabama Press. It reveals the life
and experiences of a man who led the fight against segregation
in the Birmingham of the 1950s and '60s.
The book "offers a vivid picture" of Shuttlesworth
"without portraying him as one-dimensional," wrote
Smith Awards jury member Winifred Green.
Manis is a professor at Macon (Ga.) State College, where he lectures
in American history. He is also author of Southern Civil Religions
in Conflict: Black and White Baptists and Civil Rights, 194757
and co-editor of Birmingham Revolutionaries: The Reverend Fred
Shuttlesworth and the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights.
The Southern Regional Council is an 80-year-old, Atlanta-based
organization that supports research and action projects to promote
racial justice and broaden democratic rights. Its Book Awards
program is the oldest in the South. n
