Faculty Accolades

Dr. Stephen Chew (Chair, Psychology), a Carnegie Scholar, organized and chaired a symposium entitled "Defining the Scholarship of Teaching in Psychology: Routes to Understanding" at the American Psychological Association meeting in Washington, D.C. The 1999 winner of the John H. Buchanan Award for Teaching Excellence, Chew presented a workshop on "The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning" at the American Association for Higher Learning spring meeting in New Orleans.

Dr. Jon Clemmensen (Journalism and Mass Communication) received the 2000 George Macon Memorial Award. The annual spring award goes to a faculty member "who through outstanding performance as a teacher, counselor and friend to students demonstrates the ability to inspire students to greatness."

Dr. Denita Drees (World Languages & Cultures) used a Samford Faculty Development Grant to research her essay on contemporary writer Eduardo Mendoza, called the "Spanish Charles Dickens." The piece will appear in a critical anthology of Mendoza's work.

Dr. Marlene Reed (Business) was elected president of the Southwest Case Research Association at its annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas. She was also selected as a board member of the North American Case Research Association.

Dr. H. Edward Tibbs (Music) was honored for 40 years as organist of Southside Baptist Church in Birming-ham, being presented in concert with a professional chamber orchestra in the sanctuary of the historic church. He began his 41st year on the Samford faculty this fall.
