Samford Begins Offering Doctor of Education Program

Samford's new Ed.D. degree program is made to order for professionals working in the education field. The doctor of education program offers late-afternoon courses and a curricular emphasis on solving the real-world problems confronting today's educators.

The Ed.D. program began this fall in the Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies with 30 enrollees.

"The program is in response to education alumni who have urged Samford to offer a doctorate in educational leadership," said Dr. Maurice Persall, director of the education school graduate program.

"Samford has met this need by creating a rigorous, challenging and relevant program," he added.

Ed.D applicants must have a minimum 3.7 grade point average for all previous graduate work and a minimum score of 900 on the Graduate Record Examination or 46 on the Miller Analogies Test. To earn the degree, candidates must complete 60 graduate course hours, pass oral and written exams and research and write a dissertation.

Persall said the new program has attracted "a highly qualified group who are leaders in their own school systems."
