and culture specialist William D. Romanowski, author of the award-winning
Eyes Wide Open: Looking for God in Popular Culture, will speak
at Samford University Oct. 5-7. Visiting Muslim World scholar Salwa Cherif
will lecture on Oct. 12. Baptist pastor and business ethics author Chris
Seay will speak in a special convocation program on Thursday, Oct. 14. Bread
for the World will present a hunger relief forum on Oct. 18. These events
are free of charge and open to the public..."
Religion and Culture Romanowski teaches film, communication and culture studies at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Mich. He is also the author of Pop Culture Wars: Religion and the Role of Entertainment in American Life, which was acclaimed as “a stunning portrait of the interplay of religion and popular culture.” His three-part video series based on Eyes Wide Open was the 2002 Aegis Award winner. Romanowski’s visit is presented through the Dotson M. Nelson lecture series, which honors the late longtime pastor of Mountain Brook Baptist Church. Muslim World Cherif, a professor of American and English literature at the University of Tunis, is an international scholar and speaker on issues related to the Muslim world. She is the first Tunisian female scholar to visit the U.S. through the initiative, and Samford is the first university in Alabama to receive a visiting scholar through the initiative. During her stay, Cherif will lecture in academic settings and in public venues on Muslim life and culture, Tunisia history and culture, literary representations of Muslim culture, and Muslim women and the veil. While in Birmingham, Cherif will lecture to Samford classes in cultural perspectives, history, political science and women's studies. She will also speak at other area colleges and to church and civic groups. One of her public presentations will take place at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12 in Samford’s Reid Chapel. Ethics Seay’s presentation at Samford will focus on the theme of his popular book, The Tao of Enron, in which he and co-author Chris Bryan presented the universal lessons of faith to be learned from the collapse of the company whose name has become synonymous with corporate corruption. By telling the stories of several of the principal players in that debacle, the authors described how pride, impatience, lust for power and the ability to mentally separate issues of faith from the practice of business combined to destroy what once was one of America's most admired young companies. Seay also is the author of The Gospel According to Tony Soprano, an unauthorized look into the soul of the popular television mob boss and his family. In the last 16 months, Seay has authored four new books, appeared often on radio and television programs, and become a frequent guest on CNN programs. Hunger The forum, titled “One Voice…Together,” will explore ways individuals and groups can affect the cycle of hunger and poverty. The event marks the 30th anniversary of Bread for the World, a national, nonpartisan citizens movement promoting legislation that addresses U.S. and world hunger. These events are free of charge and open to the public. |
