Samford's soccer, football and volleyball teams emerged from their first
season of Ohio Valley Conference [OVC] competition with a stunning collection
of conference honors and school records.
Soccer
- 12-4-5 record
- OVC Regular Season Champions (Samford's first OVC Championship)
- Best winning percentage in school history
- Coach Todd Yelton was named OVC Coach of the Year.
- Kim Matthews was named OVC Freshman of the Year and 1st Team All-OVC.
- Crystal Royall, Lindsay Shanks, Sara Gieger, Marian Wagner and
Kelly Christoffer were selected for the OVC All-Conference second team.
- Sharon Young and Heidi Kearns were selected for the OVC All-Conference
third team.
Football
- 7-4 record
- Third place in OVC
- Head Coach Bill Gray was named Coach of the Year.
- Junior wide receiver Efrem Hill was named the conference's Offensive
Player of the Year, and broke OVC and Samford records for most receptions
in a season and most touchdown catches in a season.
- Sophomore safety Cortland Finnegan was named OVC Defensive Player
of the Year after leading the league in tackles per game. Finnegan
was third in the conference in passes defended with 11, and he tied
for the team lead with three interceptions on the season.
- Junior quarterback Ray Nelson will join Hill and Finnegan on the
OVC All-Conference first team. Nelson led the OVC in passing yards
per game and total offense, and his total passing yards set a new Samford
single-season record .
- Defensive lineman Darold Williams was selected for the OVC All-Conference
second team.
Volleyball
- 13-17 record
- Seventh place in OVC
- Alyssa Whitehead was chosen for the OVC All-Conference second team.
- Hilary Gary and Whitehead became the first Samford teammates to
have 400 kills in the same season.
- Krista Kettering set the Samford record for most career assists.
- Stefanie Pickett set the Samford record for most career block assists.
