Samford is starting a new tradition this fall. Following each Bulldog victory students and other Samford fans will rally in the stadium plaza and proudly raise a new victory flag.
According to Michael Morgan, Assistant to the President, Samford envisions a flag so huge that it will easily be seen from the top of Shades Mountain. The flag will be placed in the esplanade between Seibert Hall and the Pete Hanna Center.
Adoption of the victory flag will coincide with Samford’s entrance into the Southern Conference, which will take place on July 1.
A committee is designing the flag and is allowing the incoming freshman class to choose the design. An E-mail message was sent to all incoming freshmen on June 24 with four potential designs from which to choose. The students were asked to respond with their choice and comment on how they felt about being able to choose the design.
“I am very excited about the victory flag,”Logan Heim said. “What a great way to promote school spirit. I can't wait to be a part of such a wonderful, prestigious university.”
“I think it's a great way to let students feel involved,” Christi Myers said. “I hope we have plenty of chances to use it.”
The manufacturing process for the victory flag will begin by July 1, and the flag will be ready for the first home game on August 28 when the Bulldogs take on the University of West Georgia.
In addition to athletics victories, the flag will be used to celebrate
other significant achievements at the university, according to Morgan.
For instance, he noted, the flag could be used when the debate or mock
trial teams win national championships, as both have done in the past.
It also can be used to celebrate individual achievements.
