A Samford University student has made the job-search process look like a piece of cake – literally.
Junior communication studies major Erin Basinger of Vestavia Hills, Ala., recently landed an internship with popular radio show hosts Rick and Bubba, also known as Rick Burgess and Bill “Bubba” Bussey. The team has a nationally syndicated morning show that is based in Birmingham.
Despite her already impressive resume and enthusiasm for the position, Basinger was hired after she delivered to the station a homemade cake with her résumé written in icing on top.
“My original idea was to make them a plain cake and take it to them,” Basinger explained," but, in talking to my dad, the idea evolved into a résumé cake.”
Basinger delivered the cake to the show’s director of interns, Demarco Williams, where she introduced herself and provided a paper copy of her résumé as well. One hour later, Erin was described on-air as a “marketing genius.”
Following up on her initiative, Basinger called the station the next morning and learned that she had earned one of the show’s coveted internships. On her first day, she received a warm welcome and the on-air identity “Shuckacorn.” All of the show’s staff and interns are given such nicknames by the hosts.
Basinger’s responsibilities include answering phone calls, lining up listeners for games, stopping and starting the recording, taking pictures for the show’s website and making guests feel welcome.
Basinger is participating in one of Samford’s many intern programs, in which she receives academic credit for her hours at the station. Credit requirements include a formal employee evaluation, maintenance of a daily journal and completion of other assignments throughout the semester.
“We start really early, at 5:45 in the morning, but it’s worth it to be there and to get to see how the whole process works and to be a part of it,” Basinger said. “I’ve listened to the show since I was pretty young, so getting this hands-on experience is really exciting.”
