Doctor of Nursing Practice

The Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing considers all application on a competitive basis.  The applicant is considered using a variety of factors including:

1. Earned master’s degree from a NLN or CCNE accredited program with a grade point  average of 3.5 or higher.

2. Submission of a professional portfolio that includes:
(It is preferred that portfolio items not be placed in a binder.)

  • Completed School of Nursing DNP application and $35 application fee. The fee is waived for Samford graduates and previous applicants. Make checks payable to Samford University.
  • Curriculum vitae or resume.
  • Verification of Post Baccalaureate Clinical/Practice Hours
  • Performance Standards for Admission and Progression
  • Two official transcripts in sealed envelopes from all colleges and universities attended (proof of statistics course completed within the last 7 years preferred). Official transcripts may be received directly from the university attended or may be included in the portfolio packet.
  • Copy of active, current, unrestricted registered nursing license in the state of practice and residence.
  • Evidence of certification in an advanced practice specialty where applicable.
  • Three completed Recommendation Forms in sealed envelopes (at least one from a former dean or faculty member, and two medical professional references). Recommendations should attest to the applicant’s academic ability and potential. Please do not submit recommendations from family members or other applicants.
  • Statement of reason(s) for seeking the DNP.
  • Narrative description of current and past clinical practice.
  • A 1-2 page paper identifying an evidenced-based practice project that you are interested in.  This could be a practice improvement issue, a clinical management problem or an area of clinical research that the applicant will address while in the DNP program. The paper should cite appropriate sources and follow APA format. In addition, the applicant must be able to identify key resources (personnel, preceptors, institutions) necessary to complete the project.
