Welcome to the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing (IVMSON). Established in 1922, the IVMSON recently celebrated its 85th anniversary as a leader in nursing education, practice and service excellence. For the period of 2005-2008, the Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing was designated as a Center of Excellence by the National League for Nursing. The designation was in recognition of the school's sustained efforts to "Create Environments that Promote Student Learning and Professional Development.".

The school's history is one of tradition founded on the principles and philosophy of Ida V. Moffett. Over these 85 years, more than 5,000 nurses have graduated from the school and are practicing not only in Alabama, but throughout the United States and the world.

The vision and passion that Ida V. Moffett instilled into the School of Nursing is deeply and forever etched in its foundation and its graduates. Based on Mrs. Moffett's vision, four major pillars serve as the foundation for the IVMSON – academic excellence, compassion, caring, and service. To continue this legacy, our goal is to build on this foundation and to continue dreaming for the future. As stated by Mrs. Moffett in 1923, "Before great things are accomplished, someone has to dream a dream."

The IVMSON offers tremendous advantages and opportunities for those who wish to pursue a career in nursing. Our academic programs include a variety of degree options at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including an option in nurse anesthesia. Foundational to our academic programs are our outstanding faculty, state-of-the-art building, and comprehensive clinical sites and resources. Located in the greater Birmingham, Alabama area, our program has access to a remarkable community of health care resources. This rich community of health care resources provides our students and faculty multiple opportunities for collaborative practice and research initiatives.

The IVMSON is one of eight schools within Samford University, a private national doctoral research university. The additional schools include the Howard College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies, School of Performing Arts, McWhorter School of Pharmacy, Cumberland School of Law, and the Beeson School of Divinity. For 165 years, Samford University has been committed to the education of the whole person (intellectual, spiritual, and social dimensions) within a framework of Christian values and beliefs.

It is my pleasure to introduce you to the IVMSON and to showcase our academic excellence, scholarship, and ministry dimensions. I encourage you to explore our website and to contact us for more information about the IVMSON.

And the world will be better for it.
