2009 IFC Prerecruitment and Recruitment Rules
Pre/Recruitment Rules (In effect NOW)
Event Planning
1. All Summer Recruitment events must be scheduled and approved by May 31.
2. All Pre-Recruitment and Recruitment events must be scheduled and approved through IFC by August 1st.
3. Ten or more people in any combination of fraternity members and potential new members are considered an event, and an event planning form must be submitted.
4. Events after 11 PM on campus are prohibited during Prerecruitment, and events after midnight off campus in non-residential areas are prohibited.
5. All fraternity Pre/Recruitment publicity must be approved by IFC by August 14th.
General Policies
6. All Samford students, including fraternity members and potential new members, are prohibited from drinking alcohol. Potential new members will not be allowed to consume ANY alcohol with fraternity members during Prerecruitment and Recruitment. Violation results in the fraternity responsible for the event being fined, at a minimum. Individuals will also be subject to University consequences/violations.
7. Women may not participate in Prerecruitment by attending fraternity events or by actively recruiting, with the exception of each fraternity's individual night of Fraternity Week and the wearing of t-shirts, stickers, pins, etc.
8. Bids or verbal commitments are strictly prohibited before Bid Day.
9. Neither fraternity money nor fraternity members', active or inactive, may be spent on potential new members.
10. Fraternity members are strictly prohibited from mentioning any fraternity's name besides their own to prospective members.
11. Fraternity members may communicate with potential new members by phone or electronic communication media. (Electronic invitations must reflect the approved PR wording/graphics)
12. The placement of individual fraternity publicity is allowed only in designated areas (to be determined by IFC and Residence Life).
13. Fraternity members may distribute to potential new members fraternity publicity in the form of pamphlets, cards, and fliers, and electronic invitations.
14. During Connections events, recruitment is prohibited. Connections leaders may not wear Greek letters at any time.
15. Fraternity members other than Connections Leaders may not assist with move-in day at the beginning of the school year. (Brothers of potential new members must receive special permission from the Director of Student Involvement to participate.)
16. Potential new members are allowed to attend fraternity events on campus and in non-residential areas off campus.
General Policies continued
17. Potential new members are allowed to ride with fraternity members off campus as long as the destination is a nonresidential area.
18. Fraternity members may visit potential new members in their residence halls, but the fraternity members must leave per request of a potential new member or staff member.
19. Potential new members are not allowed in fraternity houses after Tuesday, September 8 (Sept. 9 Formal Recruitment Rules are in effect) outside of the official hours of formal Recruitment.
20. Weekend trips and/or overnight trips with potential new members are prohibited.
Summer Events
21. No Summer Recruitment events permitted in the Birmimgham area on the dates of Summer orientations or the week of Fall Orientation/Connections/SOSA.
Fraternity Week specifics
22. Fraternity Week parties can be held during the hours of 8-11 p.m. (on or off campus)
23. Fraternity Week Party budget cannot exceed $1000.
Recruitment Rules (In effect Wednesday, September 9)
1. All Samford students, including fraternity members and potential new members, are prohibited from drinking alcohol. Potential new members will not be allowed to consume ANY alcohol with fraternity members during Prerecruitment and Recruitment. Violation results in the fraternity responsible for the event being fined, at minimum. Violation results in the fraternity responsible for the event being fined, at a minimum. 2. Women may not participate in Formal Recruitment in any capacity (i.e. Sweethearts, Rush Hostesses, etc.)
3. Bids and verbal commitments are strictly prohibited during Formal Recruitment.
4. There is absolutely no communication or visitation of any kind with potential new members outside established Formal Recruitment events (including, but not limited to, riding in cars, e-mailing, Facebook and calling.)
5. Potential new members are not allowed in fraternity houses outside of the hours of Formal Recruitment events after Tuesday, September 8.
6. Only two bedrooms per fraternity house are allowed to be displayed for potential new members' viewing, and those doors must remain open at all times during established Formal Recruitment events. Potential new members are prohibited from viewing any other rooms in the house during Formal Recruitment events, and all other rooms must remain closed at all times. In addition, each fraternity house must use the same two rooms for all Formal Recruitment events.
7. Fraternity members are strictly prohibited from mentioning any other fraternity's name besides their own during Formal Recruitment, including, but not limited to, welcome speeches, alumni speeches or any conversations with prospective members.
8. Any conversation with a potential new member including five or more brothers is prohibited and is considered a form of undue pressure or coercion (hot boxing).
