- Samford University provides, at no cost to its employees, a benefit in the event your death occurrs while traveling on University business.
- The benefit for full-time staff is based on the individual's position and annual salary and ranges from $200,000 to $500,000.
- The benefit for part-time staff is $50,000.
- The University also provides assistance for medical emergencies while traveling on business.
- The plan is called MedEx and is offered as a part of the accidental death policy.
- Services provided by MedEx include:
- Worldwide medical and dental referrals
- Emergency medical evacuations
- Coordination of emergency travel arrangements
- Emergency transfer of funds
- Assistance with the replacement of lost or stolen travel documents
- Referrals to Attorneys
- Continuous updates to family, employer, and or home
- Replacement of prescription medications
- Before going away on business, come to the Human Resources office to obtain a MedEx card to take with you.

MedEx assists travelers worldwide by utilizing highly trained, multi-lingual coordinators in conjunction with an extensive information and communication system to provide medical and travel-related assistance.
- When should I contact MedEx?
Coordinators are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
- Do I only contact MedEx in the case of an emergency?
No. MedEx is there to help you with any type of problem related to travel regardless of the severity.
- What if the local medical facilities are inadequate?
If through its medical management MedEx determines that local medical providers are inappropriate for treatment, MedEx will arrange for a medically safe evacuation to a facility capable of providing the necessary care.
- What happens if I am hospitalized?
It is important to notify MedEx as soon as possible. MedEx will immediately contact your treating physician to assess your condition and treatment plans to ensure your safe recovery. MedEx will then contact your family, employer, and personal physician as appropriate. MedEx will continue to assist you until you have returned home or have received final treatment.
- What if I want to use my BCBS insurance while out of the country? Will BCBS pay anything towards physician services outside the country?
BCBS would treat this as a major medical out of network expense. This treatment would be subject to the $200.00 calendar year deductible then reimbursed at 80% of the allowed amount.
