News About Your Colleagues

Monty Nielson has moved from his position as Registrar at Washington State University to Registrar at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The move took place on October 1, 1998. Monty is deep into his job at Madison working on the development of new programs bringing Wisconsin to the forefront in technology involving the Registrar's Office and its relationship with the campus and the entire university system.

Former AACRAO Associate Executive Director (1993-97), Roger M. Swanson, has accepted the position of Vice President at USA Group Noel-Levitz, based out of Littleton, Colorado. During 1998, he has continued his work on the AACRAO Annual Meetings in Chicago and Charlotte and the recent Strategic Enrollment Management Conference in Aspen.  Roger also engaged in various consulting activities, including a six-month, in-residence appointment at Arizona State University West. His work for Noel-Levitz will focus primarily upon consulting on recruitment and retention for client campuses.  Roger will begin January 1, 1999, when his e-mail address will be roger-swanson@noellevitz.com. Roger will live in Littleton, which is a suburb just south of downtown Denver.

And on a couple of sad notes:

James L. Moore, Registrar at Ohio Northern University from 1996 to 1991 and Ohio ACRAO President in 1976, died Thanksgiving Day.  Jim, who was 67, was diagnosed with ALS in the fall of 1997.   Jim is survived by his wife, Dolores Wickline Moore, two sons,  a daughter,   two sisters and five grandsons.  He was a graduate of West Virginia University Institute of Technology and Marshall University. A veteran of the US Army, he spent his career as an administrator in higher education, also serving as Assistant Registrar at Marshall University from 1958-1964, and as Registrar at Towson State University, 1964-1966.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the ALS Association, 299 E. Kelso Road, Columbus, Ohio 43202-2305.

Also, Joe Frazier, retired Registrar at the Montana State University died suddenly of a heart attack on November 2 at his home in Bozeman. He was very active in both AACRAO and Pacific ACRAO and had previously served at the University of Idaho.

Budget:  Additional work is needed on the Fiscal Year 2000 Budget. The final recommendation for this budget will be made on a Conference Call on January 20, 1999.

Board and Committee Restructuring:  Committee Chairs for 1999-2000 will be invited to Washington for meetings with the Board on February 27 and 28. Besides discussing the future of AACRAO which includes increased volunteerism, final discussion will take place on restructuring. Hopefully some of the changes will be made by consolidating some committees and improving their participation. Present committees "could" become either Program Committees or Work Groups. Program Committees would be concerned only with the Annual Meeting while Work Groups would have specific tasks and could also prepare sessions for the Annual Meeting.

Constitution and ByLaws Changes:  Jeff Tanner, Chair of the Past President's Task Force was present on Friday, December 11. A little more work is needed before the suggested changes are presented in the February Data Dispenser. However, the chances are very good that a "revised" mission statement will be presented as well as suggesting that our name be changed to "ACRAO." By eliminating "American" we will indicate our international presence BUT will still be known as "ACRAO."

Task Force 2000: Christine Kerlin, TF2000 Chair, was also present on December 11. The future plans and goals of AACRAO will be shaped by this excellent document.

Office Staffing: Executive Director Jerry Sullivan announced that the AACRAO Staff is almost complete.  Presently there are 17 full-time staff plus Julia Funaki who is part-time in OIES plus Saira Burki, who is presently part-time as Editor, and Jim Caputo, the financial consultant. Soon additional people will be hired in publications and communications.

Annual Meeting:  The Charlotte 1999 Annual Meeting is near. Please check the details in the AACRAO Web Page @ http://www.AACRAO.com

Research Grants Available

International Education Research Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit public benefit agency, announces the opening of the application period for the 1999 IERF Research Grants.

The purpose of International Education Research Foundation (IERF) Research Grants is to encourage and promote research on world educational systems that supports applied comparative education, specifically, the evaluation of foreign educational credentials. The grants are also intended to aid in the publication and distribution of the results of such research.

Non-renewable single grants will be awarded for specific projects in amounts of up to $5,000. Grants may also be awarded for partial payment of larger research projects. Individuals or organizations may be eligible for the grants:

Proposals will be considered on the basis of: 1) the degree to which the research is on world educational systems, 2) the relevance of the research to current issues in the field of credential evaluation, 3) the intended target population, 4) the degree to which the integration of non-U.S. educated individuals into the U.S. educational system and/or workforce, is addressed, 5) the plan for dissemination of the results of the research, and 6) the degree to which the proposal supports the educational, philanthropic, and charitable purposes of IERF.

Applicants should submit a one-page summary of the intended research plan addressing the above factors no later than February 1, 1999. Also include the amount of grant requested along with other possible funding sources, an indication of how you learned about the grant availability, and vitae of the principal participant(s) in the project. From the original applicants, finalists will be chosen by April 1st and requested to submit complete research plans for final evaluation and an award decision.

All material submitted in support of the grant application becomes the property of IERF and will not be returned to the applicant. Questions about the grant may be addressed to Diane M. Roney, Executive Director of IERF via email droney@ierf.org.

Applications should be submitted to:

Training is a Billion Dollar Business

According to the December 2 issue of Investor's Business Daily, U.S. companies will spend $60 billion this year on training their employees, and increasingly that process is being conducted over the Web.  According to International Data Corporation, technology-based training systems have grown 40% annually in recent years, and analysts expect that trend to continue.

One producer of online training software points out that offering online training in such sensitive subjects as sexual harassment provides a level of privacy not found in classroom training programs. "The privacy of the computer makes people more psychologically open. People would rather go to the computer than talk about it in a group training session."
