WAKEFIELD RESIGNS AFTER 18 YEARS AT AACRAO

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After 18 years of serving in various capacities within the Association, Henrianne (Henny) K. Wakefield has resigned as Acting Director, Publications/Special Projects at the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO). She has accepted a position with the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) in Hackettstown, New Jersey, beginning October 19. Wakefield will serve as Director of Research and Planning, a responsibility that will also include strengthening chapter relations at NKBA and assisting in the restructuring of the Association.

During her tenure at AACRAO, Wakefield took on numerous responsibilities. She started with the World Education Series of international education reports before moving on to assume the position of Director of Publications. Marketing became a separate department under her and corporate membership was initiated. While she was Assistant Executive Director, Communications, AACRAO’s publications program grew to include electronic publishing. More recently, helping AACRAO with its strategic planning and working with the Board of Directors and committees—a responsibility she found very satisfying—gave her a taste of what was to come.

Of her 18 years at AACRAO, Wakefield says the hardest part of leaving is not being able to see the friends and other colleagues each year at the Annual Meeting who’ve made her years at AACRAO so satisfying. She’s appreciated the opportunities AACRAO has offered her to learn and grow professionally and to help serve its members.

"AACRAO is losing a top-notch staffer as are we all," said Tom Johnson, Executive Associate Registrar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "Her energy, enthusiasm, and all around effort will be missed in many quarters."

Founded in 1910, the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) is a nonprofit, voluntary, professional association of more than 9,300 higher education administrators who represent more than 2,300 institutions and agencies in the United States and in thirty-one other countries. The mission of the Association is to provide leadership in policy initiation , interpretation, and implementation in the global educational community. This is accomplished through the identification and promotion of standards and best practices in enrollment management, instructional management, information technology, and student services.

Baton Rouge is ready for the EDI in Education Conference

The SPEEDE Committee has been busy planning the 9th Annual EDI in Education Workshop to be held October 26-28, 1998 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Baton Rouge, LA.

Robert Doolos from LSU has stepped forward to provide a very delightful venue and shouldered the burden of local arrangements.  Registration is being handled by Lolan MelanconSuzanne Anderson (vice chair) and Janet Busekist have worked together to provide an excellent program

Vendor support has been overwhelming.  Harbinger, NCS, SCT and PeopleSoft have made substantial contributions to support the workshop. They will be giving sessions on substantive aspects of EDI and electronic commerce. There are other vendors that are finalizing their participation as well.

Lolan states that about 100 folks have pre-registered, but hotel bookings indicate that some will register on site.  Anyone thinking about paying when they arrive needs to be reminded that the conference cannot take credit cards as a method of payment.  "Checks and the good old green stuff are fine," according to Robert.  He adds, "It will help immensely if those who plan to pay on site will fax or e-mail me their registration form by October 21. I need to tell the hotel by that day the number of meals we will need for the lunch, breakfast and breaks. My fax number is 225/388-5991."

The Postsecondary Electronic Standards Council chose to support the workshop by funding a keynote speaker who is an EDI expert with broad experience in a number of industries and by publishing the workshop proceedings (the infamous SPEEDE workbook) on CD. Here is what Betsy Bainbridge says about Rachel Forester, the keynote speaker:

" . . . Rachel Foerster [is the] founding principal of Rachel Foerster and Associates, a firm dedicated to assisting the health care industry with the transfer to electronic commerce. Rachel will speak on lessons learned in implementing EDI in health care that may apply to education. Well known and respected in EDI circles, Rachel helped introduce EDI standards to the health industry and co-founded the Healthcare Electronic Commerce Institute. She serves as an EDI business consultant, author and editor, presenter, and active member of numerous organizations supporting EDI, including ANSI ASC X12."

Visit the conference website at http://web.srr.lsu.edu/edi.   If you need further information, write to Robert Doolos via rdoolos@lsu.edu. To register for the conference, go to http://web.srr.lsu.edu/edi/form.html to access the registration form.  To learn about many of the area attractions visit the Baton Rouge Convention and Visitors Bureau at http://www.bracvb.com/.

Working together on the Year 2000 Computer Problem.

AACRAO is currently working with the Department of Education's Year 2000 Project. This effort by the Department of Education will attempt to reach academic institutions across the United States, and increase the level of awareness about the upcoming Year 2000 computer problem. AACRAO's Eric Mosel, Asst. Director for Information Technology, is a member of the Department of Education's Year 2000 working group.

"The Department of Education approached AACRAO to assist in developing a resource kit that will aid various institution in managing and solving the Year 2000 computer problem.", stated Mosel. Bradley Kofoed, the Department of Education's Director of Communications, has started a campaign to inform and educate about the Year 2000 problem (the "Y2K" problem) through various media, including Satellite Town Meetings. "AACRAO's involvement with the working group is on the technical side",  Mosel explains. "We are contributing a test program that is used in AACRAO 's office. This program tests the ability of the hardware to support dates in the year 2000. The Department of Education had already proposed a method of testing, but I thought it was too complex for the average computer user to follow. I provided to the Department of Education a test program, TEST2000, from Rightime Inc. (available for free on the Internet). We wanted to make the test as simple as possible, and just have a disk a user can insert into their floppy drive, turn on the computer, and have the test run. I modified the test a little to meet this specification, and it works quite well".

The Department of Education will distribute the test disk as part of a "Y2K Kit". The kit will also contain documentation listing resources for Y2K software problems, and sample Y2K contingency plans from a cross-section of institutions.   "We are currently contacting small academic institutions within AACRAO's membership, to see if these institutions have a Y2K plan in effect", Mosel elaborated. "What AACRAO and the Department of Education want to do is to put these plans out in the public as an example of how different-sized institutions are handling the problem. We want to create a learn-by-example atmosphere".

In addition, on December 7th, the Department of Education will hold a Satellite "Town Meeting", to discuss the Year 2000 Problem, and to review concerns and solutions. AACRAO hopes to assist the Department of Education in this endeavor by hosting some of the Satellite Town Meetings. AACRAO will keep its members informed as the event develops.

Kaplan to Offer Online Law Degree

According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, Kaplan Educational Centers, the big standardized-test coaching company, is planning to offer the first online law degree through its newly established Concord University School of Law. Concord has received authorization from the California Bureau of Post-Secondary and Vocational Education to grant degrees, which will allow students to sit for the bar in that state. The school does not yet have accreditation from either the state or the American Bar Association, and an ABA spokeswoman says association standards refer to "class time" and library collections "within the facilities." Accreditation is necessary for students who wish to sit for the bar in states other than California. Kaplan says Concord students will receive video lectures via the Internet, and that library materials will be made available online, but the company doesn't plan to apply for accreditation until it can demonstrate its students are learning the same things as traditional students.

Phoenix Expected to Grow Larger

In case you missed it in the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Apollo Group, parent company of the University of Phoenix and the largest for-profit education provider in the U.S., is teaming up with Hughes Network Systems to create a new distance learning company that will focus on expanding Phoenix's reach in the U.S. and abroad, and target new markets such as home offices and small businesses.

The first joint action of the two companies was to buy One Touch Systems, which has developed a technology for transmitting voice, video and data simultaneously. The system is already widely used among Fortune 100 companies, and will now form the technological basis for delivering Phoenix courses, as well as other courses offered by Apollo.

Are you wondering what impact this will have on those of us wedded to more traditional methods of delivering our educational product?

Coming to your desktop soon - Vcards

Anita Hall, Registrar at California State University, Sacramento, sent me this tidbit to share with you:

A mysterious invader of your desktop might come in the form of a "v-card". If you see a file pop up on your desktop with a ".vcf" at the end of the title, chances are you have just received an electronic business card.

The electronic communications industry in its efforts to adopt new standards, has come up with an automated
way for people to share pertinent information about themselves using this feature. A "v-card" is set up in an e-mail application so that you may send, receive and then upload these data files into your favorite "PIM" or "Personal Information Manager" (such as Now Contact or Datebook Pro).

If your office has not yet acquired a PIM, you can just delete these v-cards when you see them with an e-mail.
