It is the best place to learn about EDI and SPEEDE. For additional information, visit the conference Website at http://web.srr.lsu.edu/edi. You may also address requests for further information to rdoolos@lsu.edu. To register for the conference, go to http://web.srr.lsu.edu/edi/form.html to access the registration form.

They are prepared and eager to help you "shape up" this fall at AACRAO's Eighth Annual Strategic Enrollment Management Conference, November 8-10, 1998, in Aspen, Colorado. The theme this year for SEM VIII is "Achieving Optimal Enrollment Health: The SEM Rx." 3. FERPA Workshops - AACRAO sponsored five FERPA workshops this summer to update AACRAO members and other institutional administrators on regulatory changes within FERPA and the increasing complexities of complying with FERPA. Because of the success of the workshops, AACRAO has begun planning additional workshops for 1998-99. Two workshops have been scheduled to date (one at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, NC, on November 9, 1998; the other at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM , on November 18, 1998). Information about the upcoming workshops and a registration form can be obtained by calling AACRAO's Document-on-Request Service (888-6AACRAO) and requesting Document #261, or visiting our Website at http://www.aacrao.com/meetings/ferpa

4. FERPA Guidebook Available - AACRAO also recently completed its 1998 FERPA Update which provides an extensive overview of key FERPA issues and topics. 5. Representative for NAIA Needed - The Board of Directors is looking for a volunteer to be the AACRAO Representative to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). AACRAO members should contact Paul Anderson by phone: (864) 294-2030 or e-mail: paul.anderson@furman.edu no later than September 22, 1998, if they are interested in this position. The BOD will make a selection after that date IF there is more than one person interested in serving AACRAO and the NAIA in this capacity.

6. Professional Leadership - The opportunity is available for members to volunteer for committee membership or as an interassociation representative. The names of the committees and associations and the areas on which they focus are listed in the AACRAO Member Guide. Identify your areas of interest and complete the Committee and Interassociation Representative Application Form that is located in the Appendix of the Member Guide, on the Web, or through AACRAO's Document-on Request Service. The deadline for submitting your application is October 30, 1998.

POSTAL RATE REMINDER

A postal rate increase for non-profit organizations was already scheduled for October 4, 1998, as a result of the Revenue Forgone Reform Act of 1993. On top of this the USPS has asked for rate changes to every class and category of mail and propose to hit nonprofit mailers the hardest. It is expected that most nonprofit organizations would see an increase in their overall postage costs of 15-18%.

INCREASE IN LAPTOP THEFT

Computerworld reports that an escalating crime wave in laptop thefts has tacked an extra $150 on the cost of every machine, and cites statistics from the Safeware insurance agency in Columbus, Ohio, indicating that Safeware-insured companies filed $1 billion worth of claims for stolen laptops last year, a 28% jump from 1996. A common technique used by the criminals is simply to walk into office buildings and walk out unnoticed with unguarded laptops.
