Joanie Albury is the new Registrar at Lambuth University. Joanie has been teaching in the mathematics department and has served as women's softball coach for several years
Janet Beene, janetb@fsccax.ftscott.cc.ks.us, joined the Fort Scott Community College (KS) staff as admissions recruiter in July. Janet is an FSCC graduate and received her bachelor's degree with a major in agricultural journalism from Kansas State University in 1995. She has been the managing editor of the Girard Press for the past five years.
Verna Crockett, crockett@morgan.sscc.cc.tn.us, reports that Shelby State Community College and State Technical Institute at Memphis have joined together to become Southwest Tennessee Community College. Verna and Jana Turner are hard at work recommending new policies and procedures, developing forms, job descriptions and the computerized system for the new college. The Tennessee legislators believe that the constituents of Shelby and Fayette Counties will be better served and tax dollars will be better spent with the joining of the colleges. Dr. Nathan Essex has been appointed by the Tennessee Board of Regents to serve as Interim President. The Enrollment Management staff formerly of Shelby State and the Admissions and Records staff formerly of State Tech will combine to provide admissions, records, registration, graduation, veterans' and international student services for Southwest Tennessee. All employees will retain their jobs.
Helen Barker Garrett, garreth@lanecc.edu, Associate Director of Admissions, University of Oregon is moving to Lane Community College as Director of Enrollment Services/Registrar. Helen earned a Master of Education at Michigan State University, and prior to working for the University of Oregon, worked for Whittier College and the University of Southern California.
Vickie Gomez, gomez_v@utpb.edu, at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, will move from Director of Admissions to Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management, effective September 1.
Ali Guvendiren, ali.guvendiren@salem.mass.edu, is the new Director of Student Records and Registrar at Salem State College (MA). Ali succeeds George Langbehn who has retired. Prior to moving to Salem State, Ali worked at the University of Massachusetts at Boston (UMB) for 17 years in various capacities, from tour guide and mailroom clerk to Associate Registrar for Information Systems and Technology. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree with major in Management Information Systems and a Master of Education in Instructional Design both of which are from UMB.
Wendy Kutchner, kutchner@pco.edu, is the new Registrar at Holy Family College (PA). Wendy earned a Bachelor of Arts from Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and served five years in the registrar's office at the PSU-Abingdon campus and seven years as Registrar at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Wendy faces the challenges of a more diverse curriculum and implementing Datatel software "which will take up most of my time."
Valerie Mead, formerly Registrar at Trinity University, has left our profession to pursue a career as an Implementation Specialist with CARS, a software vendor based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her departure from AACRAO has left a vacancy on the Board of Directors that has been temporarily filled by Linda Finley of McNeese State University (Louisiana). See the article below for more details.
Angie Pacheco, apacheco@cccneb.edu, has begun her duties as Admissions Director on the Grand Island campus of Central Community College-Grand Island. Angie is well-known to Nebraska ACRAOns as the former Director of Placement/Recruitment/Admissions at Great Plains Community College in North Platte, where she was also the student senate adviser. Angie earned a Bachelor of Arts in education from Kearney State University and a Master of Arts in educational administration at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Anita Reece, reecea@mailbox.uarts.edu, is the new Registrar at The University of the Sciences (formerly Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science) effective just this week. Anita received her Bachelor of Science degree from Drexel University and has spent time working in administrative computing at Neumann College (PA) and Beaver College before becoming Beaver's assistant registrar. The last four-and-a-half years have been as Registrar at The University of the Arts (PA).
Elizabeth Ross, rosse@newschool.edu, has been promoted to Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs and University Registrar at New School University. Liz has been "just" the University Registrar. Congratulations!
Hilary Ward Schnadt, hschnadt@luc.edu, is the new associate dean for curricular affairs at Loyola University Chicago's Mundelein College after having been associate dean of Northwestern University's University College, the evening program for working adults, for 15-1/2 years. Hilary will be working on developing more online degree programs for Mundelein, which is LUC's adult student program. Northwestern had kept her busy with teaching a course, curriculum planning and faculty hiring, new non-credit program development, and overseeing the academic advising and student services. Until this year, Hilary was also responsible for the alumni association and was the dean's liaison to development. Her Ph.D. is from Northwestern. "I'll miss the direct contact with students, but I'm glad to be going into a registration season for which I have little or no responsibility!" Enjoy the "walking commute," Hilary.
David Stones, dave.stones@mail.utexas.edu, is retiring from the position of Database Coordinator at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) on August 31. He will then move into the private education sector, having accepted the post of Registrar at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, near his home. Dave has earned Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in mathematics, and is all-but-dissertation on a Ph.D. For the past 21 years, from within the Registrar-Admissions arena, he has coordinated computer support and student information systems for most offices in the division of Student Affairs at UT. He has overseen development of the Texas Statewide Common Application website and consulted extensively with colleges, universities, and related organizations. A leader and regular presenter for Texas ACRAO, Southern ACRAO, and AACRAO, including receipt of SACRAO and AACRAO Distinguished Service Awards, Dave was a founding member of AACRAO's SPEEDE Committee, which developed ANSI ASC X12 standards for use of electronic data exchange (EDI) with transcripts, certification, and applications for admission. For the latter he developed both an institutional code crosswalk and the free UT Austin Internet EDI Server. He helped establish the Postsecondary Electronic Standards Council, and received the 1998 Apex Award from AACRAO. He is a longtime Boy Scout volunteer and enjoys all types of athletics. Dave's co-workers have created a retirement website to which his colleagues are invite to contribute. Enjoy your celebration, Dave, and the new challenges coming your way as registrar at Southwestern University.
William Villa, Director of Admissions at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is retiring after 30 years of service to the campus. Bill will be sorely missed by his colleagues in the admissions profession as well as everyone at the UCSB campus. (from Betty Huff, huff-b@sa.ucsb.edu)
Roberta Weil, rweil@ucsd.edu, is retiring as Director, Graduate Academic Affairs and Admissions at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Roberta served the Graduate Interests Section of AACRAO as a committee member and chair for a total of five years, plus other committee assignments, and has been active with the Council of Graduate Schools and Western Association of Graduate Schools. After receiving her Associate of Arts from Rio Hondo Community College, Roberta earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science from California State University, Fullerton, and a Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis on higher education management from Claremont Graduate University. She worked for the Coast Community College District as a professor and assistant dean before her 13 years at UCSD. "I am currently working at UCSD on a "semi-retirement" basis until a successor is appointed and then will continue with part-time special projects and doing some consulting. I look forward to more discretionary personal time, and to more travel, kayaking, and folk harp playing." Your colleagues wish you and Paul wonderful "discretionary time."

Finley Tapped as Acting Vice President
Linda Finley,
D
ean of University Services
and Registrar at McNeese State University (Louisiana), is now AACRAO's Acting Vice President of Registration, Records and Information Technology.
Linda will serve in that capacity until the Business Meeting at the 2001
Annual meeting in Seattle, when someone else will be elected to a three-year
term for that office. The vacancy is due to the recent resignation
of Valerie Mead, who has accepted a position
as an Implementation Specialist with CARS Information Solutions, and is
no longer eligible to serve on the Board of Directors.
Regarding the selection process, Paul Aucoin, Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee, said that "the AACRAO bylaws leave it up to the committee to recommend someone to the board to appoint as acting VP until an election can be held at the next annual meeting." Paul canvassed the other committee members as to who should be recommended, and eight of the nine endorsed recommending Linda to the board. The other member was not able to be contacted. He added that, " Linda told me she has chosen not to be considered for nomination to a full term, so the committee will be recommending someone else for election to this position for a three-year term when we meet in November."
After Paul conveyed the recommendation to AACRAO President Louise Lonabocker, the AACRAO Board of Directors voted unanimously to appoint Linda Finley as the Acting Vice President for Registration, Records and Information Technology at the July Board meeting in Seattle.
AACRAO members who wish to contact Linda may do so by e-mail at lfinley@mcneese.edu.
We need nominations for President-Elect; Vice President for Finance; Vice President for Registration, Records, and Information Technology; and for the 2001-2002 Nominations and Elections Committee.
Print the Nomination for Leadership form at http://www.aacrao.org/am/am00/nom_ballot_01-02.pdf and fax it to Vice-chair Carol J. Cline, Assistant Director of Admissions at the University of Minnesota, at (612) 626-1693.
If you have questions about the nomination process you can call Carol at Phone (612) 625-9886 or send an e-mail to her at c-clin@tc.umn.edu.
Various other agenda items were discussed by Betty and the other PAB members; who are Jackie Freeze, Nora McLaughlin, Linda Finley, Jim Christianson, Joann Stedman and Paul Aucoin. Glenn Munson, of the College and University Editorial Board, stood in for Editor Steve Gawkoski. Vice President for Professional Development and Publications Wil Corprew was unable to attend due to illness, and the committee is pleased to learn that Wil is doing better and is now back at work. Barmak Nassirian and Jerry Sullivan gave the group the office's perspective on publications. The PAB sent forward several recommendations to the Board of Directors.
The PAB will meet again physically in Seattle at the annual AACRAO meeting and electronically until then. Please contact Betty at HUFF-B@sa.ucsb.edu with any concerns or suggestions about publications.
Caught in the Surf: Websites You Can Use
FERPA Final Regulations: In case you hadn't heard yet, the newest version of the final regulations for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act go into effect August 7, 2000. Access or download at http://www.ed.gov/offices/OM/fpco/HotTopics.html. Text and Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) versions are also posted under the FERPA heading at http://web.aacrao.org/asp_aacrao/govrel/issues.asp.
NCES Quick Figures: The National Center for Education Statistics has released a very useful "Quick Tables and Figures" tool which quickly provides access to tables and figures based on your search criteria. Using information from the "NCES Education Statistics Quarterly" -- from all NCES survey sources and added to with each quarterly statistical release -- should keep you up-to-date with your institutional research or higher-administrative colleagues. To try this new tool please visit http://nces.ed.gov/quicktables/. As an example enter "ethnic enrollment" as a search phrase and select a topic area of Postsecondary Education to see the latest (1997) summary statistical tables. The new quarterly is available at http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2000606. And don't forget the NCES "Fast Facts" page at http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/FAQTopics.asp?type=3.
NSF Doctoral Recipients: The National Science Foundation and four other federal agencies have sponsored the report "Doctorate Recipients from United States Universities: Summary Report 1998", with a special section this year on the indebtedness of students. The report is based on data from the Survey of Earned Doctorates, which every research doctorate recipient (since 1957!) has been asked to complete (95% do). The report has information on doctoral graduates' educational histories (from community college to the doctorate institution), demographic profiles, and post-graduation plans. This report is available in print from NORC 1-800-248-8649 or is available from the NSF web site at http://www.nsf.gov/sbe/srs/srs00410/start.htm.
Public Education: Barmak Nassirian, nassirianb@aacrao.org, Associate Director of the AACRAO Office, recommends the NewsBlast service of the Public Education Network (PEN) as "a great resource." PEN is focused on public school improvement "...to create systems of public education that result in high achievement for every child. We work to educate the nation about the relationship between school quality and the quality of community and public life ...Our goal is to ensure that the availability of high-quality public education is every child's right and not a privilege." You may subscribe to NewsBlast at http://www.PublicEducation.org/news/signup.htm.
Study Abroad: The Institute of International Education (IIE) publishes a widely-used, annual directory of study-abroad programs, but it is difficult for students to use in finding a good "fit" with their interests and finances. However, IIE's new iie passport web site at http://www.iiepassport.org/ allows students to search it's database of 5,000 programs for one meeting personal criteria. Other links provide information on study abroad organizations and help in the application for U.S. passports.
Transcripts for Department of Defense Schools: Lou Jimenez, ljimenez@accdvm.accd.edu, Director of Records and Registration at St. Philip's College in San Antonio, provided an excellent link for those who have Department of Defense students seeking their academic records or curricular information. The transcript link is http://www.odedodea.edu/transcript/. By backtracking to http://www.odedodea.edu/, the reader finds links to curricular guides, academic calendars, and even e-mail links to the various schools. Thanks, Lou.
NB: If you know of a web resource or a bit of web humor that you think may be useful to your colleagues, please send the URL to Scott Dittman at sdittman@wlu.edu so it may be considered for inclusion in a future issue of NetNews. Tell a little about why you like it and be credited with the catch.
The
photo to the left may invoke memories of New Orleans for those of you who
attended AACRAO's 90th annual meeting, but it is not too soon to begin
planning to join us in Seattle for the next meeting. If you have
not done so already, take out (or click to) your calendar and block out
April 22-25, 2001. And bring your camera and see if you can take
a better picture of Mt. Rainier than the one at right. Special thanks
to Dorothy Kiser, Registrar at Hardin Simmons
University in Abilene, Texas, for sending the New Orleans photograph.
Dannette Sullivan, Assistant Provost for Enrollment Services and Registrar at Seattle University, and Janet Ward, Assistant Vice President and Dean of Enrollment Management, Seattle Pacific University, are the co-chairs of the Local Arrangements Committee and they are getting the Seattle Convention Center ready for us to meet there.
Go to http://www.aacrao.org/am/am01/am-2001.htm for more information, and for links to lots of information about Seattle and the area. You might even want to eat in the restaurant that revolves around the top of the Space Needle. The view is fantastic, and you can take a monorail to get there, well to the bottom, anyway.

Golden Rules for Living
If you open it, close it.
If you turn it on, turn it off.
If you unlock it, lock it up.
If you break it, admit it.
If you can't fix it, call in someone who
can.
If you borrow it, return it.
If you value it, take care of it.
If you make a mess, clean it up.
If you move it, put it back.
If it belongs to someone else and you
want to use it, get permission.
If you don't know how to operate it, leave
it alone.
If it's none of your business, don't ask
questions.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If it will brighten someone's day, say
it.
If it will tarnish someone's reputation,
keep it to yourself.
