ng in
Seattle where the keynote speaker on Sunday, April 22, will be Carr
Hagerman, who will share the FISH! Philosophy.
There is a unique fish market in Seattle where the employees bring incredible fun, passion, and individual accountability to their work. Their work is cold, wet and smelly, yet they decide they have the power to choose the attitudes they bring to work. According to the FISH Philosophy, people must decide for themselves whether an organization's vision is worth committing to. They must see it, feel it, live it -– and when they do, they generate amazing, self-sustaining power.
Carr's keynote is just one of several treats that await you in Seattle at the Washington State Trade and Convention Center in Seattle. Hurry and make your reservations because some of the hotels are already sold out, as indicated below. AACRAO has reserved space for Annual Meeting participants at the following hotels, but the cut-off date for those rates is March 21.

Part I: Income
and Expense Ratios
(This is the first of two
installments on AACRAO Financial Ratios.
The first installment will provide an introduction to financial ratios
and a discussion of AACRAO’s Income and Expense Ratios.
The second installment will focus on Balance Sheet Ratios.)
During the past two fiscal years, your AACRAO Board and AACRAO Staff have
worked diligently to improve AACRAO’s financial status.
Beginning with FY 1999 and continued in FY 2000, members were asked to
support a dues increase that would assist AACRAO in rebuilding the reserves
funds, while improving services to members.
Internal reports from AACRAO’s
Vice President of Finance and Board Finance Committee, as well as external
reports from the Independent Auditor indicate that AACRAO’s financial
condition has steadily improved. In
an effort to determine how well AACRAO is doing financially as compared to peer
organizations, a series of financial ratios was computed utilizing the year-end
financial statements for FY 2000, ending June 30, 2000.
Financial ratios are a valuable tool
in benchmarking an organization's financial performance.
It is important to remember that ratios are only one tool that we should
use in determining financial performance and that we should continually use
ratios to view performance over time, rather than for a single point in time.
Also, a ratio that is out of line with an industry benchmark may indicate
an area where further investigation is needed before any conclusions are
developed.
The financial ratios were developed
based on guidelines from the ASAE
Operating Ratio Report, Eleventh Edition (2000).
For comparison purposes, we utilized organizations which were exempt
organizations under Section 501 (c) (3) of the IRS Code of 1986 and that had an
annual income between $2,000,000 and $5,000,000.
This resulted in approximately 38 organizations for the Income and
Expense Ratios.
The ASAE report provided Industry
Averages and Medians. The value of using both is that one organization can distort
the average by having either very high or low numbers in one area.
The median is the actual midpoint. By
reviewing both industry comparisons, we can view which is the better benchmark
for AACRAO.
Income and Expense Ratios are ratios
presented as percentages of total revenue for this analysis.
When we look at the bottom line or the Profitability Ratio (Total Income
minus Total Expenses), we find that AACRAO’s ratio was 8.1% based on income
exceeding expenses by $316,436 for FY 2000.
This measure represents the percentage of total revenue remaining after
expenses. The Industry
Average was 9.8% and the Industry Median was 4.7%.
This was good news, as AACRAO was near the industry average and exceeded
the median.
A look at two other Income and
Expense Ratios reveals AACRAO’s dependency on members for income.
The Membership Dues/Total Expense measure reveals that 45.9% of
AACRAO’s income that is used to pay expenses is from membership dues.
The Industry Average is 35.9% and the Industry Median is 31.8%.
The Conference and Meeting Income/Total Expenses reveals that 35.3% of
income that is used to pay expenses is from AACRAO’s Conference Registration
Fees. The Industry Average is 28.6%
and Industry Median is 29.2%. The
combination of these two measures reveals that direct income from members
provides more than 80% of the income to pay expenses, compared to the combined
industry average of 65% and industry median of 61%. This dependency on members
for income results in pressure to increase dues in order to offer new services
or to meet the increasing cost for existing services.
Both your Board and your Executive Director continue to explore options
that will reduce this dependency on members for revenue.
Two other ratios worth noting are
the Publications Sales/Total Expenses and Investment Income/Total Expenses.
In the publications area, AACRAO’s percentage was 5.5% while the
Industry Average and Median were 7.5% and 2.7% respectively.
In Investment Income, AACRAO’s percentage was 2.8% while the Industry
Average and Median were 4.1% and 3.3% respectively. Both of these measures indicate AACRAO can improve in
these two areas. However, to
improve in the publications area requires more authors to write more
publications. This has been an
on-going challenge in recent years, as fewer members have expressed an interest
in authoring publications. The
investment income measure should continue to improve, as AACRAO continues to
rebuild the reserve funds. As
reserves and overall revenue increase, associated investment income should also
increase.
For more information on AACRAO Income and Expense Ratios, contact Joe Roof, AACRAO Vice President of Finance at roofj@dbcc.cc.fl.us. AACRAO Financial Ratios will be discussed in more detail during the 2001 Annual Meeting at a Roundtable Discussion scheduled for Monday, April 23 at 5:30 pm.

Dictionaries: The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary has been available, free of charge, on AOL since 1995 and on the Web since 1996. Now the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language is available at http://www.bartleby.com/61/. Bartleby's American Heritage dictionary takes the Merriam-Webster dictionary one step further. Not only does the online edition of the American Heritage dictionary have over 90,000 entries and 900 full- page color illustrations, it also has 70,000 audio word pronunciations. To hear how a particular word is pronounced, just click on the beige speaker icon in the pronunciation section of that word's definition. Of course, it is silly to assume that everyone in the world speaks English. YourDictionary.com is a portal for online dictionaries, giving you links to more than 1800 dictionaries representing more than 230 languages. These dictionaries are organized into five different sections:
Language Dictionaries, http://www.yourdictionary.com/languages.html: links to online dictionaries in 230 different languages, from Afrikaans and Aklanon to Xohsa and Zoque.Fraudulent degrees: Wade Robinson, wrobinson@mail.unomaha.edu, Director of Academic Records & Registration, University of Nebraska at Omaha reports on an ABC News article on fraudulent degrees and especially Columbia University's experience with them. Computer News Daily (29 December 2000) reports the number of Internet companies offering fraudulent college degrees is increasing, according to a new report from a private watchdog group. The newest edition of The Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees Nontraditionally, to be released in January, will count 481 fraudulent schools, up from 320 in its 1998 survey. The market for such degrees exceeds $200 million each year, estimates John Bear, author of The Bears' Guide. University of North Dakota professor Barry Lumsden, an authority on degree mills, says Internet companies use numerous techniques to lure unsuspecting consumers, such as hosting their sites in the .edu domain and inventing agencies to give accreditation to their schools. Few government officials have taken an interest in the problem, observers say, and those agencies that do face significant obstacles in stopping online degree mills, as many of the mills base their operations in several different countries.Specialty Dictionaries, http://www.yourdictionary.com/specialty.html: dictionaries and glossaries of specialized words in the English language in fields ranging from advertising and agriculture to travel and water.

The Digest of Education Statistics, 2000 provides a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of education from pre-kindergarten through graduate school. Topics in the Digest include: the number of schools and colleges; teachers; enrollments; graduates; educational attainment; finances; federal funds for education; employment and income of graduates; libraries; technology; and international comparisons. The Digest is on the web at http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2001034
NCES has just released on the web (not yet on paper) a Research and Development Report in school finance, entitled: "A Primer on Making Cost Adjustments in Education." This report by William J. Fowler, Jr., National Center for Education Statistics, and David H. Monk, Dean, School of Education, The Pennsylvania State University was undertaken so that educators, the public, and policymakers might better understand both geographic and inflation adjustments, and how they might be applied to elementary/secondary education. The authors seek to inform these audiences of the differences in expenditures and costs, as well as how both geographic and inflation education cost adjustments can be used to assist in differentiating nominal and real costs. The authors are particularly concerned with approaches, techniques, and adjustments that may either not be appropriate for measuring costs in education, or that are inappropriately applied. In addition, they attempt to show that there is a real virtue to keeping cost adjustment indices as simple and understandable as possible. The report is available at http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2001323
Federal Registry Notice: http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/fedreg/r&e_guidance_notice.pdfSearch engines (AltaVista): AltaVista, www.altavista.com, has gotten a great facelift. They have jettisoned many items that had nothing to do with being a search engine. Most of the clutter on the front page is gone, including headline news from ABCNews.com, clubs, photo albums, home pages, message boards, chat, My Altavista, and the My Live! customized portal, including bookmarks and stock portfolios. (I'm sorry to say that the advertisements are still prominent, but that's not surprising these days.) There are also some new features that searchers might find interesting. AltaVista now offers an "education search" which allows you to search over 20 million pages of college and university sites. Basically this is just a search hardcoded to restrict searches to the .edu domain, but it's a great first step. See http://tools.altavista.com/s?spage=av/SEdu.htm&only=yProvisional Guidance: http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/inforeg/r&e_guidance2000update.pdf

Search engines (Google): The New York Times, in a February 22, 2001, article (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/02/22/technology/22GOOG.html) reports that Google, http://www.google.com/, has become the first major search engine to index documents in the Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF files are favored by many academics and researchers, who want to place their text online but do not have time to convert their files into the standard Web language, HTML. Google estimated that it has made 13 million PDF documents available through its search engine. Google's David Krane said this represents about 70 percent of all PDF documents available to the public online. Users need to download free software to read PDF documents (from Adobe Systems which developed the PDF format) although Google has made text versions of some of its indexed PDF files available. Krane noted that the average HTML file has only one-fifth the number of words as the average PDF file does. He added that Google engineers found the average PDF file to be 100-fold larger than the average HTML file. The resources necessary to index such a large pool of data may prevent other search engines from adding PDF documents, observers speculate. The Internet Tourbus, January 6, 2001, reports that Google has a free "Google US Government" search engine that "automatically weeds out non-government stuff" and only gives you hits from the .gov, .mil, and the government-related .us domains (like www.state.va.us). (Don't forget about the firstgov.gov site AACRAO NetNews pointed you to back in the November 2000 issue.) Google also offers a "University Search" that lets you "narrow your search to a specific school website." Finally, Google is now offering free site search to universities. University webmasters can get more information on this at http://services.google.com/googleuniv/login.
Test yourself: If you are one of those folks who enjoys constant
self-analysis, or if you want to evaluate some of those faculty, students,
or colleagues who surround you, check out AllTheTests.com at http://www.allthetests.com.
This is a directory of tests of the Web, including IQ tests, personality
tests, career tests, etc. The site is browsable by category or keyword
searchable. Site listings include the name and URL of a site, a brief description,
and some idea of how long the test will take (longer than an hour, less
than 30 minutes, etc.) Additional icons denote whether the test is form-based,
if you can take it offline, whether you get the results via e-mail, and
the test's rating.
NB: If you know of a web resource or a bit of web humor that you think may be useful to your colleagues, please send the URL to Scott Dittman at sdittman@wlu.edu so it may be considered for inclusion in a future issue of NetNews. Tell a little about why you like it and be credited with the catch.
We are wondering how long will it be before those of us in higher education who receive federal funds will be asked to do something like this, too. If your website is already meeting this challenge, please send the URL to Scott Dittman so that we may share it in the next issue. For starters, look at this MSWord file of resource organizations for people with disabilities and visit the web pages of Galludet University.

More Whipped Cream
I have a new delightful friend, I am most in awe
of her.
When we first met I was impressed, by her bizarre
behavior.
One day I had a date with friends, we met to
have some lunch.
Mae had come along with them, all in all a pleasant
bunch.
When the menus were presented, we ordered salads,
sandwiches, and soups.
Except for Mae who circumvented, and said, "Ice
cream, please. Two scoops."
I was not sure my ears heard right, and the others
were aghast.
"Along with heated apple pie," Mae added, completely
unabashed.
We tried to act quite nonchalant, as if people
did this all the time.
But when our orders were brought out, I did not
enjoy mine.
I could not take my eyes off Mae, as her pie
a-la-mode went down.
The other ladies showed dismay, they ate their
lunches silently, and frowned.
Well, the next time I went out to eat, I called
and invited Mae.
My lunch contained white tuna meat, she ordered
a parfait.
I smiled when her dish I viewed, and she asked
if she amused me.
I answered, "Yes, you do. But also, you
confuse me."
"Why do you order rich desserts, when I feel I
must be sensible?"
She laughed and said, with wanton mirth, "I am
tasting all that's possible.
I try to eat the foods I need, and do the things
I should.
But life's too short, my friend, indeed, I hate
missing out on something good."
"This year I realized how old I am," she grinned,
"I've not been this old before.
So, before I die, I've got to try, those things
for years I have ignored.
I've not smelled all the flowers yet, there're
too many books I haven't read.
There're more fudge sundaes to wolf down, and
kites to be flown overhead."
"There are many malls I have not shopped, I've
not laughed at all the jokes.
I've missed a lot of Broadway hits, and potato
chips and cokes.
I want to wade again in water, and feel the ocean
spray upon my face.
Sit in a country church once more, and thank
God for His grace."
"I want peanut butter every day, spread on my
morning toast.
I want untimed long-distance calls, to the folks
I love the most.
I've not cried at all the movies yet, nor walked
in the morning rain,
I need to feel wind in my hair, I want to fall
in love again."
"So, if I choose to have dessert, instead of having
dinner,
Then should I die before night fall, I'd say
I died a winner.
Because I missed out on nothing, I filled my
heart's desire,
I had that final chocolate mousse, before my
life expired."
With that, I called the waitress over, "I've changed
my mind, it seems,"
I said, "I want what she is having, only add
some more whipped-cream!"
