Statement of Purpose

The objective of the Samford Prelaw Society is to create a community of students and faculty interested in the legal profession by promoting an awareness of the law and the legal process. The Society will strive to help students prepare for entrance into a formal legal education by providing opportunities for academic advancement while fostering social growth. In order to assist the development of exceptional attorneys, the Samford Prelaw Society will encourage fellowship among students, faculty, and local members of the legal profession.

Rules and Procedures

Prelaw Advisor and Prelaw Advisory Board:

  1. Both the Prelaw Advisor and members of the Advisory Board are encouraged to contribute to the “From the Faculty” portion of the Pre-Law Society Newsletter, The Amicus Curiae.
  2. Both the Prelaw Advisor and members of the Advisory Board are encouraged to attend meetings and events whenever possible.

Officers and Representatives:

  1. Officers will be selected at the beginning of each fall semester except in cases when circumstances do not allow.
  2. Should an officer withdraw from the organization for any reason, he/she will be replaced by a member selected by the Prelaw Advisor
  3. Representatives will be selected at the beginning of each semester except in cases when circumstances do not allow.
  4. Should a representative withdraw from the organization for any reason, he/she will be replaced at the next Society meeting.
  5. All Officers and Representatives will perform their assigned duties except in occasion of emergencies or be forced to relinquish their position.
  6. The method of selection of officers and representatives will be determined by the Prelaw Advisor.

Members:

  1. Society membership is open to any undergraduate students interested in going to law school as well as members of the faculty who are interested in the law.
  2. All members will pay dues on the second meeting or event of each semester except when directed otherwise.
  3. Members must maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.5.
  4. Meetings and Events will be held at the discretion of the President and Prelaw Advisor a minimum of once a month.
  5. Members are required to attend a minimum of two meetings or events each semester.
  6. Upon initiation each member will receive a Membership Packet outlining organizational information.
  7. Any member coming under University discipline will be subjected to review and possible rejection by faculty and officers.
  8. Members wishing to withdraw from the Society will be required to notify both the President and the Prelaw Advisor of their Decision.
  9. The purchase of Samford Prelaw Society T-shirts is encouraged but not required.
  10. Members are encouraged to contribute to the “May it Please the Court . . .”portion of the Society newsletter, The Amicus Curiae.
  11. Members are encouraged to participate in Samford’s Mock Trial Team.

Faculty

The Prelaw Advisor will:

  1. Meet with the officers a minimum of once every two weeks except when circumstances do not allow.
  2. Work with the President to create a Semester-Long Budget.

The Members of the Prelaw Advisory Board will:

  1. Help organize meetings and events whenever possible.
  2. Make Prelaw Society Announcements in classes and encourage other members of the faculty to do so.

Officers

All Officers will:

  1. Attend regular bi-weekly meetings when needed.
  2. Meet with the Prelaw Advisor a minimum of once every two weeks unless excused.
  3. Work to Promote the Society and i’s events through classes, other activities, or other available avenues.

The President will:

  1. Create a Semester-Long Budget with the Prelaw Advisor Lead in Organizing Meetings and Events.
  2. Work with the Prelaw Advisor to set Dates for Meetings and Events.
  3. Attend All Meetings and Events unless excused by the Prelaw Advisor. Act as a Liaison Between Faculty and Students.
  4. Maintain Records of Organization.

The Vice President will:

  1. Help Arrange Speakers.
  2. Help Lead and Organize Meetings and Events.
  3. Help Set Dates for Meetings and Events.
  4. Attend All Meetings and Events unless excused by the Prelaw Advisor.
  5. Act as President in Case of Presidential Absence.

The Secretary/Treasurer will:

  1. Maintain Minutes of Meetings.
  2. Maintain Finances in Line with Budget.
  3. Maintain Membership and Dues Records.
  4. Attend All Meetings and Events unless excused by the Prelaw Advisor.

Representatives

The Class/Department Representatives will:

  1. Attend Meetings and events unless they notify the Officers and the Prelaw Advisor of their absence.
  2. Recruit members from class, department, or other organizations whenever possible.
  3. Act as liaison between class or department that they represent and Society leadership.
  4. Form and Act as Select Committees to Organize and Arrange Events.
  5. Attend all Meetings and Events which they help plan.
  6. Attend Periodic Organizational Meetings with Officers unless they notify the Officers of their absence.
  7. Work to Promote the Society through classes, campus activities, or other avenues.

Advisor will:

  2. Work with the President to create a Semester-Long Budget.

The Members of the Prelaw Advisory Board will:

  1. Help organize meetings and events whenever possible.
