Alpha Lambda Delta: A Brief History
Alpha Lambda Delta was founded in 1924 at the University of
Illinois. The Dean of Women, Maria Leaonard, established it as
an honor society for women. As more chapters were created, Alpha
Lambda Delta became a national honors organization. Men were
initiated into the society starting in 1975. The words “we
shall pass our torches on, one to another” were adapted
from Plato’s Republic. Since its founding in 1924, over
230 chapters have been established all across the United States,
and more than 650,000 students have been initiated into this
prestigious honor society.
