Excerpt from campus e-mail sent by Provost Brad Creed on August 20, 2007
Dear Member of the Samford Community: In keeping with our strategic emphasis upon stewardship, there are several initiatives that the university will be undertaking this year and beyond to support sustainability and environmental awareness on our campus. The Office of Institutional Effectiveness at Samford has researched proposals and best practices at universities across the nation and has produced a report suggesting the following:
- Place recycling bins in each department or office for recyclable materials.
- Make all publications and / or reports accessible via electronic form or the web to curtail paper waste.
- Turn off lights, heaters, fans when leaving office (for lunch as well as at end of the day).
- Turn off computers when leaving for the day.
- Reuse paper by printing on both sides for "unofficial" documents (i.e. testing a report, etc.).
- Post some guidelines as to what the "official" thermostat setting should be (for the offices that are able to control their thermostat).
- Take care to close outer building doors when exiting.
- Set printers, copiers, fax machines to energy saving mode when not in use.
- Recycle printer cartridges.
- Promote inter-department/office competition for "good stewardship" with incentives to recycle by recognizing departments that do the best job (e.g., blurb in Inside Samford, free drink at Food Court, plaque).
- Install signs in rest rooms for employees to report any plumbing problems immediately so that leaky faucets and running toilets do not go unchecked.
- Purchase recycled office supplies (paper, steno pads, file folders) in offices and departments when possible.
- Continue "Earth Day" recognition campus-wide
