Our Program
Our major is designed to teach students about human communication in its varied contexts and modes of expression. We differ from Journalism and Mass Communication in that our focus is upon people rather the medium itself (such as print and electronic media).
Our program has received national recognition. In 2006, we were identified as an engaged department, meaning that we successfully address the needs of our students, the University, and the Birmingham community. You can read more about us in "Samford's Communication Studies: Seizing an Opportunity," which is a chapter in Kevin Kecskes edited book, Engaging Departments (Anker Press, 2006).
The goal of our program is to teach students to:
- write, speak, listen, and think critically
- adapt to a wide range of audiences and cultures
- successfully manage personal relationships
- work effectively in groups and organizations, and
- conduct independent research.
