Our Courses

Drs. Galloway and Parker welcome new students to the departmentWe offer a variety of interesting courses. We teach classes that focus on developing effective personal relationships, such as Interpersonal Communication and Communication in Close Relationships. You'll learn all about the intricacies of developing, maintaining, and even ending relationships with others. Importantly, we teach effective conflict management strategies, because conflict is an inevitable part of any relationship. These courses are designed to help to manage "people" issues that arise in everyday life.

Have you ever been in a group where someone let everyone else do all the work? Most of us have had this experience, but rarely do we know how to deal with it. We offer a course called Small Group Communication that helps you make better decisions in group settings. Comm Studies students prepare for classWe also teach important principles of workplace dynamics in our course titled Organizational Communication. If you plan on having a career, you'll need to understand how communication works in both for-profit and nonprofit companies.

We emphasize the development of skills in intercultural communication, as well. One of our goals is to prepare our students to communicate effectively in the "global village" of the 21st century. Students who have solid training in intercultural communication are better prepared for cultural exchanges with other groups, which is inevitable in today's world. Students with an interest in missions work, the ministry, and business find these courses directly applicable to their careers. Emily Bourke and Anna CushmanHowever, because many of our majors spend some time traveling and even working abroad, virtually all of them take these courses!

We also teach courses in public communication. One course that is a key component of our major is Oral Communication, in which we teach the fundamentals of public speaking. Such a course is essential in preparing students for whatever career path they choose. Because we live in a world where politics, the law, and the media have a profound impact on our lives, we also offer courses in political communication, legal communication, media criticism, computer-mediated communication, and language and society.

Research has shown that people who know how to write well tend to go farther in their careers. Danielle the writerWe offer a number of interesting courses designed to strengthen our students' written communication, such as creative nonfiction, professional communication, and grammar for writers. All students benefit from instruction in writing, and our majors report that these courses really moved their communication skills to a higher level. We believe so strongly in the importance of good writing that we even offer a writing minor to interested students.
