Sara Helms, PhD, joins the Brock School of Business from the University of Alabama at Birmingham as Department of Economics, Finance and Quantitative Analysis as an Assistant Professor of Economics.  She teaches principles of economics, public economic and the MBA economics.


Dr. Helms’s research interests include applied micro-economics and public policy, particularly in the areas of volunteering, charitable giving, education policy and public health policy, using both traditional econometric and experimental methods.  She joins two co-authors at Samford, Dr. Thornton and Dr. Woodley.  Her work has been published in the American Journal of Sociology and the National Bureau of Economic Research. 

She has presented her work at the annual meetings of regional, national and international organizations, including the American Economic Association, Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Activity, Economic Science Association, Southern Economic Associatio, and at the Institute for Studies of Labor (IZA) in Germany, and the American Time Use Research conference. Helms is a Research Associate at the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.


Dr. Helms earned her B.A. in Economics and Mathematics, Summa Cum Laude, from St. Mary’s College of Maryland (1999), and her M.A (2002) and Ph.D. (2006) in Economics from the University of Maryland.  While completing her graduate work at the University of Maryland, she received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (2003), and Teaching Awards from the Department of Economics (2001 and 2002).  She taught for one year as a Visiting Instructor at her alma mater, St. Mary’s College, 2005-2006. 

Dr. Helms is a member of the honor fraternities Phi Beta Kappa, Beta Gamma Sigma, Omicron Delta Epsilon and Omicron Delta Kappa. She was recently named the Beta Gamma Sigma Professor of the Year at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
