April 24, 2009 - Mr. Beeson's Big Idea
Students in Dr. Betsy Dobbins' and Dr. Larry Thompson's honors seminar created a uniquely Samford sculpture for Earth Day 2009. "Mr. Beeson's Big Idea" is a found-objects interpretation of the famous statue of Ralph W. Beeson that sits on a bench at the foot of Centennial Walk. The sculpture takes its name from the scavenged lightbulb in its head and celebrates Samford's recent efforts to "go green". -

February 13, 2009 - Students Make Glass Beads to Help Caribbean Turtles and Islanders
Samford students make glass beads during a Jan term trip to help save endangered Caribbean turtles. According to Geography professor Jennifer Rahn, fisherpeople on many Caribbean islands often eat the endangered turtles because they are too poor to buy food. A cottage industry in manufacturing glass beads helps the turtles by reducing local poverty. After a bead-making class, the Samford group was invited to spend part of a day turning discarded bottles into a more sustainable future for turtles and islanders. Photo by Jennifer Rahn -
