New Scholarship Honors Debbi Bates ‘94
Samford has announced the creation of a new endowment scholarship honoring alumna
Debbi Bates ’94. Founded by Debbi’s Phi Mu sisters, The Debbi Bates Memorial Scholarship
has been established to honor and celebrate the life of a loyal friend whose faith and joy enriched everyone fortunate enough to know her. Breast cancer took her from us in 2006, only a few days after her 34th birthday, but her spirit continues to teach and inspire us.
Debbi knew from the moment she first visited Samford that she had found the perfect environment for her intellectual and spiritual growth. She considered it a great privilege to attend Samford and was deeply appreciative of the opportunity. Her outstanding educational experience provided a strong foundation for developing the effective communication and leadership skills that led to her successful career in retail and property management.
This scholarship is designed to perpetuate Debbi’s love and gratitude for her invaluable education at Samford. Once the minimum amount required to establish this endowed scholarship is contributed, two scholarships will be awarded annually to assist other young women from single-parent homes attend Samford. Hopefully, the recipients of these awards will recognize and find in themselves what Debbi’s Phi Mu sisters found in her – a diligent scholar, a counselor of great faith, and a lifelong friend who lived her life with poise, integrity, compassion, optimism and kindness-a truly whole person.
