Samford Defeats Furman Twice; Football Garners National Recognition
CompughterRatings.com has ranked the Samford football team 16th in the nation among Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in its newest rankings posted on Sunday.
CompughterRatings.com is designed, created and published by Steve Pugh. Compughter Ratings is an advanced mathematical model used to rate teams in various competitive sports. The model uses a "least squares" method to generate initial ratings estimates and then employs a "maximum likelihood" technique to produce the final ratings.
Samford is currently 3-2 overall and 1-2 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs earned a 26-21 Southern Conference win at Furman on Saturday. As a result of Saturday's win, Samford jumped 14 spots in the ratings after being ranked 30th last week.
Saturday's win was the second-straight for the Bulldogs, who also defeated Gardner-Webb, 41-14, on Oct. 1. Samford's two losses this season have come to Wofford and Georgia Southern, ranked first and second in the ratings, respectively.
The Southern Conference has five teams rated among the first 20 teams in the rankings. Wofford (1st), Georgia Southern (2nd), Appalachian State (11th), Samford (16th) and Elon (19th) are among the top 20 teams rated.
Samford will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 15, when the Bulldogs play host to Elon in a Southern Conference contest. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start from Seibert Stadium.
