Softball Begins Fall With Victory Over Ole Miss

The Samford softball team got fall play off to a great start Saturday against Ole Miss in Oxford. The Bulldogs tied the Rebels in the first game before winning the second game, 7-1. Both meetings were seven-inning games with free substitution.

"I was proud of how our team played," Samford head coach Beanie Ketcham said. "They were very composed and focused both games. We had very few mistakes and took advantage of miscues from Ole Miss. It was a good start to our fall season."

In the first game, senior Stephanie Royall and sophomore Robyn Harmon combined on in the pitcher's circle to throw a two hitter. In five complete innings, Royall gave up two hits and struck out three without giving up any runs. Harmon pitched two complete innings, striking out two and giving up no hits and no runs. The Bulldogs committed only one error on defense and had only two hits on offense.

In the second game, senior Amanda Barrs and Harmon combined for six hits and one run in the circle. In five complete innings, Barrs gave up four hits, one run and struck out two. Harmon gave up two hits, no runs and struck out one in two complete innings.

Offensively, the Bulldogs scored seven runs on 12 hits. Freshman Brianne Chambers, sophomore Amy Gonzalez, senior Katie England and Barrs all had multiple hits. Freshman Anna Kimbrell, Amanda Jordan and Harmon each had one hit while Gonzalez, England, Barrs and Harmon were each credited with an RBI.

The Bulldogs will continue fall play this Friday, Oct. 9, as they host Jacksonville State in a 5:30 p.m. meeting at Bulldog Field.
