Legacy League Sets Run to Benefit Scholarships
Samford University's Legacy League has scheduled its first-ever "Sunset 5K for Scholarships" Sept. 29.
The Sunset 5K begins at 5 p.m. at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium and will proceed along the Lakeshore greenway. The Sunset 5K includes a 5K course, equivalent to 3.1 miles, and a one-mile Fun Run. Either distance can be run or walked.
Proceeds from the run will benefit scholarships for students who are not able to afford Samford on their own, said Lisbeth Cease, Legacy League Ways and Means Committee chair. Cease originated the idea for a 5K fundraiser. Legacy League member Beth Steed, a four-time Samford alumna and avid runner, is chairing the event.
"It seemed essential to the mission of the Legacy League to increase the involvement of the community and the membership in events that would benefit our scholarship endeavors," Cease said. "A run seemed a great fit since we could attract the 'professional' runners, as well as families with children and the older community and membership as they participate in the Fun Run or walk."
Entry fees are $20 for the 5K run and $10 for the Fun Run through Sept. 21. On Sept. 22, fees increase to $25 for the 5K and $15 for the Fun Run. Anyone with a valid Samford identification card can register for $15 at any time and must show their ID when picking up a registration packet. Those who register by Sept. 21 are guaranteed a souvenir T-shirt, Cease said.
The Legacy League, formerly known as the Samford Auxiliary, supports the university in many ways, with scholarships as a major focus.
Registration and other Sunset 5K information are available at www.samford.edu/legacyleague. Mail-in entry forms are available at the Trak Shak in downtown Homewood (Ala.) or online. Deadline for mail-in registration is Sept. 21.
