Philadelphia Attorney, Birmingham Business Executive Named Samford’s Alumni of the Year

Attorney Ann Thornton Field of Philadelphia, Pa., and business executive William (Bill) J. Stevens of Birmingham will be honored as Samford University’s 2010 Alumni of the Year during Homecoming Nov. 5-7. They are being honored for their professional and civic leadership and longtime support of Samford.

The honorees will be recognized at an alumni banquet on Friday, Nov. 5, and during a parade and football game on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Field, a 1977 cum laude Samford business graduate, is a member of the 550 attorney national law firm, Cozen O’Connor, headquartered in Philadelphia. There, she heads the Aviation practice and is chair of the general litigation department. She also sits on the firm’s board of directors and management committee.

Vice chair of the board of visitors for the National Judicial College, Field is a former board member of the Arts & Business Council of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and the Literacy Action Project. She is currently board chair of Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, and also serves on the board of the Philadelphia Police Foundation.

Field, who grew up in Northport, Ala., from age 10, is a graduate of University of Houston Law Center. The mother of  two daughters, she is a member of Philadelphia’s Wayne United Methodist Church.

Stevens, a 1970 Samford business graduate and longtime trustee of the university, is president and chief executive officer of Motion Industries, Inc., a leading distributor of industrial maintenance, repair and operation replacement parts.  He joined the company as director of human resources in 1978 and rose steadily through management positions before being named to his current post in 1997.

A member of the the Samford board of trustees from 1997 to 2009, Stevens was board chair from 2003 to 2007.  Stevens also serves on the boards of Bearing Specialists Association, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, the Salvation Army, Boy Scouts of America Greater Alabama Council and Junior Achievement of Central Alabama.

Stevens, a native of Alexander City, Ala., is a member of Birmingham’s Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. He and his wife, Kimeran, have two sons.
