C. Stephen Evans To Present Samford's Holley-Hull Lectures
Philosopher and Søren Kierkegaard expert C. Stephen Evans will present Samford University's 2012 Holley-Hull Lectures September 12 and 13.
Dr. Evans, university professor of philosophy and humanities at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, will speak on Kierkegaard-related topics during two lectures at Samford and one at Mountain Brook Baptist Church.
The schedule is:
Wednesday, Sept. 12, 5:45 p.m., Mountain Brook Baptist Church, "Kierkegaard as a Christian Thinker."
Thursday, Sept. 13, 10 a.m., Samford's Reid Chapel, "Taking Every Thought Captive for Christ," and 3 p.m., Faculty Shop-Talk, Brooks Auditorium, "Is Kierkegaard an Irrationalist? Kierkegaard on Faith and Reason."
The public is invited to any of the lectures free of charge.
Considered one of the nation's leading experts on the Danish philosopher and theologian Kierkegaard, Evans is a past president of the Society of Christian Philosophers and the Søren Kierkegaard Society.
His published works include Natural Signs and Knowledge of God: A New Look at Theistic Arguments (Oxford: Oxford University Press 2010), Kierkegaard: An Introduction (Cambridge University Press 2009), and Kierkegaard's Ethic of Love: Divine Commands and Moral Obligations (Oxford: Oxford University Press 2004), and other single-authored books and edited volumes.
Evans holds a bachelor's degree from Wheaton College and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Yale University, where he was a Danforth Fellow. Prior to joining the Baylor faculty, he taught at Wheaton and at St. Olaf College, where he was curator of the Howard and Edna Hong Kierkegaard Library, and at Calvin College.
