University Responding to International Health Situation
Samford University is responding to the international swine flu outbreak by monitoring current situations while continuing normal operations. The university has established a special website to disseminate information.
The university activated its Pandemic Planning Team earlier this week, a normal procedure when the World Health Organization issues an alert. The team coordinates the university’s response in such situations, according to Sarah C. Latham, Samford’s vice president for operations and planning. The university also is working with the Jefferson County Health Department and Alabama Department of Public Health.
The university has been updating students and employees throughout the week and urging extra precautions such as washing hands regularly and other preventative measures outlined by the Centers for Disease Control. Latham emphasized that as of mid-morning May 1 there were no confirmed or suspected cases of swine flu among students or employees.
“We want our constituents to know that we are aware of the situation and are responding appropriately,” Latham said. “We have a very good plan in place.
